aborted render definitely unusable ?
Hi everybody and merry christmas,
Here are my specs : Vegas pro 8b, Gygabite Ep35-dsr3 MB with 2.4 Ghz Intel Q6600 processor, Nvidia 9500 GT CG card, XP Pro
3 days ago I started a render of a personal holidays movie : the project lasts 1.30 hr, comprising avchd files mixed with high res photos, a few color corrections and fade in transitions. I attempted to render to bluray-AC3 (render image only as I still don’t own a BD burner). The render was abruptly stopped by a power blackout !! To my despair it had reached probably more than 85% (as I let it work alone for the night). What I could spare is a 7.3 Go avc file with no sound.
My question is :
– is it worth trying to paste this file with the end of the movie if I chose to render the missing end of the project in Vegas eventually muxed with the soundtrack I have saved from the project;
– if so what soft on earth could I use ? I have searched thoroughly through this forum and others but can’t find a program able to paste together 2 avchd files without rerendering: NLE softs will probably refuse to do it because of the mere size of the avc file. I have a trial version of Powerdirector8 which can read my aborted avc file (once renamed as .mp4 or .avi) but the preview window is horrible; I guess it would make an awful reencoding alltogether
– of course I have tried Vegas itself but it won’t open a 7 Go media even only in the media project window, ,not to speak of pasting it on a timeline whatsoever…

The problem with salvaging a file that is incomplete is that the header information which specifies the stream size is probably not written properly because Vegas was still writing the file when it was stopped. It may be quicker to restart the render than to spend days trying to salvage the file.
There is a utility called tsMuxeR that can append AVCHD files together without re-rendering. I would try this and see if it helps you out.
If your area is prone to power outages (like mine) I would definitely get an uninterrupted power supply (UPS). Mine has paid for itself 100 times over in work not lost. Good luck.

Thank you John for your answer. What I find so precious in this forum is the professionalism of its members ! I will try out the soft you advise. Meanwhile I have been given a hint about the Elecard studio converter which maybe could do the trick.
I will make attempts and see if it can help someone else.
Concerning the blackouts here in Paris they are rather rare but in winter not so rare as from the rest of the year !Bonjour de la France.
