A/B Track Editing in CS3?
Hey there,
I recently upgraded to CS3 and I can’t seem to figure out how to do A/B track editing on the same Video Track. Does anyone know where this setting is? It used to be defaulted on the 6.5 I was using, but I can’t find it.
To be more specific, I’m looking for an easy way to drop two clips on the timeline and then add a transition like Cross Fade and have it auto adjust so that I don’t have to lengthen or shorten it to match it up.
If anybody knows how to do this I’d appreciate it. Thanks!

I don’t think I ever used A/B editing, but I do recall seeing a number threads addressing similar issues. Search the archives of this forum or the Pro forum.

I tried searching for “A/B” but got no results (including this thread) which makes me wonder if that term is just unsearchable with the current engine. Is there some alternate way to say the same thing? Multi-track Editing perhaps?

A/B editing in the timeline went out with Premiere Pro.
When dubble clicking on a transition in the timeline it opens in the project window, this is simular to a/b editing. -
That’s kind of what I don’t understand. It shows a box with A/B tracks, but (to my knowledge) there’s no way to actually put the clips on more than one of those tracks. For example, I just added 2 overlayed test clips on Video 1 and Video 2, and a transition on Clip 2 (Video 2) and then double clicked on it and this is what it shows:
A – Empty
F – Transition
B – Clip 2The Start Preview box is blank/black and the End Preview box is the beginning of Clip 2. How do I get Clip 1 to be on the A line so that I actually line everything up? This is all very counterintuitive 🙂

To add a transition between two clips these clips need to be on the same track next to each other in the timeline.

You can use a transition effect between two clips on two different tracks by overlapping the clips than applying the transition to the head of the ‘out’ clip (this clip should be layered on top of the ‘in’ clip).

I’t takes some time getting used to Pro when swiching over from 6.5. But after a while everything falls into place. Good luck.
