    Hey guys,

So basically, I wanted to learn about scripting in AE.

After playing around, I decided to take a go and start the tutorial. Sadly enough, I’m stuck on the first step:

“You should save your text with the Unicode (UFT-8) option.” […] “To run the script, (don’t forget to create a comp first), just go to the File menu, select “Run Script”, then select “Choose File…” (assuming you haven’t stored it in the “Scripts” folder). Then navigate to wherever you saved your script and open it.

Thing is, even if I copied/pasted the “expression” in Notepad and saved it as Unicode (UFT-8), it doesn’t appear. I go to Files > Run Script > Choose File > AAE Scripts (where I saved it) and, there’s no script at all. If I click on “All Acceptable Files” and I click on the Notepad file, it’ll do nothing.

Am I doing something wrong? Is there a basic program where I can save those expressions in a “*.jsx” format?

    Thanks for your time guys.

    Hey rendernyc,

    Thanks for the quick response.

[rendernyc] “are you positive that the file has a .jsx extension?”

No, the problem is, it’s not a *.jsx file (*.txt file, if I’m not mistaken)- as Dan Ebbert said in his tutorial, it seems like you can save it as an Unicode (UFT-8) text file and by doing this you’ll be able to import it in AE as a script. That’s exactly what I did, but it seems like AE won’t import these Unicode type files that I saved in Notepad.

    Thanks again.

    Hey,

[rendernyc] “try changing the extension to .jsx”

By renaming the file? If so, it didn’t work.

If not, I can’t find a text editor on my computer that exports to *.jsx format.

    Thanks for your help.

they are just text files (albeit dan mentions the proper encoding, but thats beyone me) , but as far as programs go…

your afx install should include the Extendscript toolkit where you can read, edit, and save JSX files

I’ve been able to open and edit files in notepad/textedit without any problem, saving as plain text and then manually adding the .jsx extension. I don’t want to get annoying but as someone else asked you are positive the os isn’t hiding the extensions on you?
Whether AE lets you “see” a script file to select it should be dependent on the name alone as far as I’m aware.

    Thanks for your response guys.

[glennser] “you are positive the os isn’t”

    OS?

I’ll look in my AAE CD if I forgot to download something or look in my manual/call Adobe.

    Thanks a bunch.

Don’t ask me why, but I was recording my problem with Camtasia Studio by showing you what I was doing and… it worked.

Alright then, now I’ll have to figure out why it didn’t worked before.

    Thanks for the help guys.
