I’m new with my XH-A1. Recently filming cascading water on “A” (autopilot), I got great results, except with some of the closeups. The fast moving water, closeup, produced faint, yet noticable, large square pixel-like shapes (but much larger that a pixel).

The more distant moving water shots are fine.

Does anyone know why I am seeing this and what I might do to prevent it?

    Thanks!

Because the A1 uses the HDV codec, it doesn’t capture all of the frames individually. It captures two main frames every second and then encodes the other frames based on how much change happens between those two frames. A video clip with a lot of motion in it won’t hold up as well because the camera can’t keep up with the amount of change in each frame and that is what causes the big squares. Really, the only way to avoid it is to set up your shots so that there isn’t as much motion in the frame. It’s a hinderance, but something you have to deal with.

Thanks! I appreciate the explanation and will now watch for this, more closely, in scenes that have a lot of motion.
