    Hi all,

I’m about to dig into a large AE music video project and aren’t sure what comp settings I should use. The piece is entirely greenscreen with photoshop backgrounds.

The video footage was shot DVCProHD 720p 24p on the HVX-200. It was then keyed using Ultimatte and the clips rendered out as Animation 1280x 720 (1.00) 23.976fps.

Deliverables – The video is in high demand in Europe and will get extensive airplay there. I don’t expect that will be the case in the states. It will have heavy internet distribution. The label will pay for the out of house PAL transfer (I’m on an NTSC system) and with the current equipment I have, the highest quality I can produce in house is a Beta SP master.

My equipment: Mac Pro Quad, Kona LHE, Beta SP deck.

I sometimes like working in a 720×486 environment with 1280×720 footage since it allows me to “blow shots up” without really blowing them up. However, if its not the smartest way to go, I don’t need to.

So any thoughts on what my comp settings should be. My instinct is to go with the NTSC D1 preset 720×486 (.90) 29.97 since laying to Beta SP is the best option available to me, and is something I can deliver to the house that makes the PAL transfer. The other side of me wants to plan for the internet and keep it square pixel 24p and deliver a quicktime file to the house for PAL transfer, but I’m not sure how problematic that will be for them? I notice there is a NTSC D1 Square Pixel present (720×540). What is that typically used for?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If it’s intended market is EU, I’d lean towards PAL, but I’d ask them what they would like before spending a ton of time editing at a particular size and frame rate.

Color Grading presets for After Effects, Premiere, etc., plus free presets and more.

Would it be easier to conform the 29.97 down to 25fps? That’s a pretty standard conversion that wouldn’t require a speeding up of audio right? Or would the speed up only happen in a software conform?

I will double check on the HD with the label, but I will suspect that their response will be, “HD, yeah that would be cool!”

    Ha! Deliverables these days…

“1st copy: full resolution quicktime file or .avi on a CD or data DVD.
(Please do not send authored video DVDS as they are compressed)
2nd copy: mini-DV tape of finished video (if you are unable to create a mini-DV copy of your video we understand)

All media will be converted to DV NTSC 4:3, so if your video is in a different format (HD, 16×9, PAL) it is okay, but know it will be compressed for standard DV.”
