I recorded to DV tape on HDV 30 fps 1080p.
I set my FCP audio/video settings to:
    -sequence preset: prores 422 (HQ) 1440×1080 30p 48 khz
+ actual footage is at 29.97
    -capture preset: HDV
    -device control: HDV firewire

    Sequence settings were set to:
    -1440×1080(16:9)
    -pixel aspect 1440×1080
    -29.97 fps

When placing footage in the timeline, it requires it to be rendered. And exported footage looks blurry and bad.
I had recently change my settings for a standard def project and now I don’t understand why I can’t get them back to the quality I expect. Anybody know where I’m going wrong

What happens when you click ‘yes’ if FCP asks you to match the sequence settings with the footage?

    Good point.
It changes the compressor from Pro res 422 (HQ) 1080p to HDV 1080p 30.
And the final result is the brilliant quality I was looking for.

I don’t necessarily understand why the pro res compression destroyed my image quality so badly, but glad it was a simple fix.
