A Technical issue relating to CPU/GPU integration
Technical details: I am using build 425 of Vegas Pro 11 on an HP Pavilion DV8t with an i7 840 CPU and 8Gig RAM. Dual 500 Gig HDDs and a G-Force GT 230M with 285.62 driver and 1G memory. I’m running Windows 7 (64) with service pack 1.
I have been interested to see just what work CPU and GPU does when I preview a video clip on Vegas, so I downloaded a free application called Process Explorer from Microsoft. It allows me to check the load on each individual core (thread?) of the CPU as well as the GPU (amongst other things).
I noticed that when the GPU was enabled, the amount of work done on the CPU was noticeably reduced. The GPU was of course now operational. In other words, it does not appear that the GPU actually adds processing power to the CPU, rather, it simply allows the CPU to work less. Are my settings wrong? I would have thought that the more processing power – the better?! Right?
Also, for this test I added some Gaussian Blur that I knew would create a heavy load on the processors – and the preview was (as expected) very jerky. But here’s the thing that I don’t understand: Neither the CPU, nor the GPU were operating at 100% of their processing power. In fact some of the cores of the CPU weren’t working at all! It’s no wonder the playback was jerky!
So the question for the Gurus of this great forum is…wasssup? Why is my Vegas not making use of the computing power available to it?
Your input is, as always, greatly appreciated!
Cheers,
Bruce
