A spotlight effect on a performer

December 11, 2022 at 5:36 pmYou know how a spotlight in the dark has little moving light motes in it? That’s what I want. Does anybody make a a plug-in? I’ve messed around with masks and feathering and noise in fcp, but that doesn’t give the look I want. I figure I might have better luck with After Effects but it’s been years since I used it. And I’m a total newbie to Motion. Advice please?

December 11, 2022 at 7:41 pmMoving lights? Do you mean shadows?
Not sure if there is anything like that in FCPX but in AE you would have to create masks and use 3D shadows to create that.

December 11, 2022 at 9:28 pmI’d do it in Motion. The lights in Motion are super easy to learn/use. Here’s a very old tutorial of mine, not the same effect, but same technique you’d use.

December 11, 2022 at 10:34 pmI’ll try it. Thanks. Just went back to After Effects. Light Sweep is pretty wonderful!

December 12, 2022 at 1:31 amSomeone on FCP.co posted this effect they made as an FCPX template. You’d have to search the “Free Plugins and Templates” section there.

December 12, 2022 at 2:26 amTry searching online for keyable footage of dust motes. I think that’s what you’d see in a spotlight beam. I’ve seen that somewhere, but can’t think of the vendor.
