  • A shatter ripple through effect?

So I have something in mind I am trying to achieve in After Effects.
Basically, I have my logo (just thick text) and an icon comes smashing in and hits the bottom right corner. What I would like to have happen is have the text shatter in a ripple (basically so it doesn’t STAY shattered at the end).
I’ve been messing with the Shatter effect, and I really like how it looks (the glass shatter map – but not much extrusion, just the black lines of the shatter (I put a black stroke on the layer)) but I can’t seem to have it spawn from the impact site and ripple through the text, maybe extrude/pop up a tiny bit and return to normal.

It might not even look right (I mean physically, that would never happen, but whatever)

I hope I am explaining myself good enough.

So the icon flies in from the viewer, smacks the text, and the text shatters+ripples outward returning to normal after it passes through

Any idea how I should go about this?
After Effects CS3, by the way. I’ve been messing with it for a bit, so I’m not really trying to just have you guys do the work, just a little shove in the right direction.
    Thanks so much!

Not quite sure the effect you are looking for, but you could try precomposing it, then time remapping the precomp to have the shatter fly back together. To get your “ripple” you might try having to copys of your shatter precomp on playing forward, and the other reverse then animate a soft circular mask to transition between them.

Long ago, when Shatter was new, Brian Maffit explained how to do something similar.
Get your shatter layer working the way you want it to. Make a copy of your Shatter layer and keep all the settings exactly the same, really all you need to do is swap the start and end points of the Shatter Force Sphere and use time remap to run the second layer backwards. Then you must carefully create an invisible transition between the two layers.

Not exactly intuitive but I’m pretty sure it can be done.

Expressions that pull all of the Shatter settings from the main layer into the copy will allow you make changes to the comp on the fly without having to keep making new copies.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”
