    Hi,

I’m completely new here, but just decided to post because I’m completely at a loss about something.

I edit video game footage for friends. It’s a hobby. They upload these videos to YouTube. In the past I’ve used Vegas to edit but recently got Final Cut for my little MacBook. Basically the issue is this: I import the footage in at a resolution of 640×480. According to a friend you can use the distort tool to fit a 900×480 resolution. It yields surprisingly good results. But everytime I change the render settings to 900×480, and distort it to fit, it simply won’t render. The progress bar appears and then disappears and that’s it. I don’t know if this is some sort of bug or if I’m just doing something wrong.

    I’d really appreciate some help.

    Regards

900X480 really a resolution used in video. Why do you want that setting? Try 720X480.

    wow…what was i thinking. I mean, “900X480 isn’t really a resolution used in video.”

    Haha!

I’m using it because YouTube likes it. I’ve tried out various settings for the new YT widescreen and it seemed to work best. Further testing with your recommended resolution is in order though, I think.

    Thanks for your time!

Where are you getting your information? For widescreen, youtube either wants 640X360 or 1280X720.

I know that, but when you upload to YouTube it messes with the quality. I’ve tried both 640×360 and 1280×720 (Which taking upscaling to the limit) and neither look as good, when uploaded, as 900×480. What I’d like to know is why Final Cut won’t let me render! It won’t let me do anything but 4:3. Very irritating!

Have you tried customizing your FCP sequence settings to adhere to your desired format?

You could also edit as normal in Final Cut with a 4:3 timeline and reformat your video in Quicktime through the Visual Settings afterwards. This is essentially just changing the order of operations of your steps, but may save you from rendering in FCP.
