I have a client that wants me to make a wedding montage for her since the video camera at the wedding quit working. I am using pictures from the wedding photographer. What are people’s opinions about scanning in someones wedding pictures for creating a photo montage?

Contact the photographer. The photographers I know don’t like others using their pictures unless the client bought that right.

Now that depends on who will be viewing these DVD’s. He might just let you have them for free anyway, but I think the ethic thing here is, if you are selling a product that includes his work, you should really check with him.

Photographers own the reproduction rights to their images, including wedding photos, there have been lawsuits over this before and the Phototog has never lost, like Vincent said, contact the Photographer in question for permission, you may have to pay a fee as most wedding photographers I’ve worked with recently do their own photo montages on CD and DVD.

You could probably pass the cost of any reproduction rights to your client. If you get the photographer’s consent, make sure it is in writing.
