    Hi Doug,

I asked you this question a while ago, you may remember. I still have not decided on a camera to purchase and I wanted your opinion because you have much more knowledge than me. Here are my options:

    Canon XL2 – approx $2500.00
    Canon A1 – approx $3000.00
    Sony V1U – approx $3500.00
    Panasonic HVX-200 – approx $4300.00

I basically produce wedding videos and short films only with no real requirement to go HD other than, it will be our standard way of living soon.. I would like a camera that I do not have to bring 1000 watts of lighting in order to look crisp so low light is preferred. A also like the 24p option which all of these cameras offer (24f in the A1) and I would like to dabble with green screen (Keying). I just like the feel of a shoulder mount camera and that is why I am leaning towards the XL2.

In your opinion, do you think that the XL2 is a worthy purchase? Or, would you lean towards one of the other choices listed above. If there is another camera that I have not mentioned, please let me know… I truly appreciate your time and honesty.

P.S. When are you coming back to Toronto??

I can’t imagine anyone purchasing an SD camcorder these days, period. HD authoring not withstanding, the image derived from an HD source downconverted to SD is still significantly better than any SD camcorder can offer.

The HVX200 isn’t the camera I’d recommend either. Smallest imager, smallest recorded image, and noisiest camera of the lot you mention. Not to mention the not-so-optimal workflow of P2 and Vegas.
My list would probably run like:

    Canon A1-
    Sony V1=
    XL2
    HVX200

Would love to return to toronto if the film school would like to bring me back. Currently on an Israel, Turkey, Singapore, Malaysia tour for HD Production and Vegas. When it’s warm in Toronto, I’d love to be back there, too. 🙂

Thanks for the advise Doug. The only question I have regarding the A1 is the audio downfall. Is there a way to record from the onboard/boom mic and say a wireless mic at the same time? I understand that it is not possible. Being a wedding videographer once and a while, I can see this posing a potential issue. Is it either one or the other??

    Thanks again..

P.S. Weather is horrible right now… I would rather be where you are…

    Ciao..
