Saw Andrew Kramer’s tutorial on creating the streaks on the ipod nano commercial using trapcode particular and tried basically repeating it to make a second streak. This worked fine except the two streaks would not interact; even if one was technically behind in z-space it would still obscure one that is infront in z. Is there any way for two or more streaks to interact realistically i.e. one obscuring the other when it is infront of it instead of the order being solely dictated by layers. Hope thats clear enough. Might be something to do with the visibility settings?
    Thanks a lot.

if you just duplicate the emitter, particular will use both (or more) emitters to generate particles, and they will seem to interact since all of particles are being generated within a single instance of the plugin.

and, since andrew used a wiggle expression, you don’t even need to change the postion (the duplicate emmiter will have a different random seed, and thus different postions based on that seed). however your particles will have the same color.

if you created separate comps (to create a different color, prehaps) and put both particular comps in a new comp, you may be able to make them seem to interact by setting the blend mode to add.

There’s a section in the particular controls called visibility. In there, you can set an ‘obscuration layer’ which will let you choose which layers appear in front of others.

Yeah I was trying out Andrew’s iPod streaks tutorial as well and I tried to move some text [ on a 3d layer ] through the streaks, but it would not obey Z space?!

Even when I tried using the ‘obscure layer feature within Particular…?

    What’s up with that?!

[moldyboot] “however your particles will have the same color.”

No, not necessarily. If you use the “Custom Colorize” method, each emitter will properly inherit the light’s color, which is more or less equal to using an extre tint/ fill. You just need to get away from replicating Andrew’s methodology 1:1.

It does, but depending on what paramaters you use for the wiggle, there may be simply not enough separation between the particles to cater for that. Depending on what you are trying to do, you should consider getting rid of the wiggle entirely and animate the position by hand.

    Awesome, thanks for that!

When I do that, should it obey Z space by default, or do I still need to do something with the ‘obscuration layer’ controls?
