  • A New System For Me – Anyone see a problem with it?

I have so much respect for you COW forum contributors. My current system has been running well for almost three years and you guys have aided me in many ways. I just got approval to purchase a second editing desk and I have put together the list below. I’m asking for input if anyone sees a potential problem here. My budget is maxed out by this proposed equipment. I know that all of us have preferences, and you may not see your favorite item here. I have picked the items that should get me down the road for a few years, and most of them are brands that I have a level of comfort with.

The main use for my current and my new system is/will be capturing LIVE SD video and editing for output to Beta SP tape for local/national broadcast. I haven’t mentioned this, but I am the Media Director for a large church in Alabama. I do not anticipate going to HD in the next several years. I also create commercials using SD video and After Effects output.

    Here goes:
Apple 2.5 GHz Quad Core Power Mac with 2.5 Gigs of RAM and two internal 500 Gb hard drives
ATTO Express PCI-E UL5D SCSI card
    Blackmagic Decklink Extreme PCI-E card
    Final Cut Studio
    Dell 24″ Monitor
Bella Keyboard for Final Cut Pro
    M-Audio powered speakers
Medea Video RAID 5/1250 RT3 1.25 TB SCSI Ultra-320 Array
(I already have a Sony broadcast monitor and Beta SP tape decks)

My only hesitation concerns the Medea Array. Published specs show the Medea with 125 MB/sec transfer speed. A similar size Huge System array claims 200 MB/sec speeds, but the Huge Systems price is over $1,000 more. Remember, I edit in SD. I rarely use more than three streams plus up to four layers of graphics. Will I be okay?

Thanks in advance for your input.

I really wouldn’t recommend SCSI with any new system. Apple doesn’t support it anymore and it’s really an old technology. I would go Fibre Channel for sure. yeah it costs more, but the speeds are outrageous.

And it’s my own personal preference, but I’m not purchasing anything new until after NAB and probably not until the first Intel machines come out.
