    Sticking with fcp 7. Doing a “wait & see” for X.

    Have had Avid & Smoke in the past….tempted by Avid, had a smoke long ago and don’t want to go there again…it was great & stable, but not digging the interface, the cost involved and too many steps to get to DVD/Blu-Ray/Web. I first learned editing on Premiere, but there has always seemed to be a stability issue with it.

    Kevin … thanks for jumping in …. i’d like to hear some anecdotal about people who have made the switch from fcp to premiere pro. i’ve been poised for months suspecting we were going to get imoviePlus … we did, and i’m making the switch to adobe. but i can’t afford to grind business to a halt while i cross-train … how is the learning curve going from fcp/motion, to pp / ae ?

    thanks …

    @stephen

    I switched to Premiere Pro from Final Cut Pro 7 back in September 2010. All I do is multicam and the last couple years it’s been AVCHD or XDCAM footage. I couldn’t deal with the transcoding of 2 hours per angle with FCP and the slow as hell scrolling of the audio waveforms on a 2 hours sequence.

    Premiere Pro just blows it away. I can use all the native footage instantly. No issues with the audio waveforms. The interface is pretty similar To FCP7. It took only about 30 minutes to feel comfortable with it.

    What do you expect will be in 6 that you have to wait for? MC 5.5 is a pretty stellar release.

    FCP to Premiere will be a breeze. In a few days you’ll feel right at home. The original version of each program was written by the same folks, back in the day.

    FCP to Avid — MUCH bigger learning curve, but in my opinion well worth it.

    I have a 10 GIG Ethernet card in my Mac which only works under the 64bit Kernel due to a bug in the OSX network stack (thank, Apple, for that, too).
    32bit will give me kernel panics.
    MC 5.5 requires you to boot into a 32bit kernel, only 6.0 will become full 64 bit.

    Yeah, say what you want about Avid, but they have ALWAYS focused on the professional market and will continue to do so — perhaps to their own detriment at times.

    For now I’m sticking with FCS 2 to see what lies ahead in terms of new Mac Pros, Lion, and Apple’s response to the community. Hey, maybe Apple will surprise us with a point release by August which adds all of the missing pro i/o features, and also includes an integrated node-based Phenomenon compositor, along with a $50 64-bit Soundtrack Pro. I’m not holding my breath on the last two parts, but it would be nice!

    If Apple fails to address the complaints of the pro community, I don’t know where I’d look next. I’m not looking forward to going back to Avid’s archaic interface and some of the workflow (although I admit I haven’t used it in several years). I got to preview Softimage DS (Now Avid DS) before it was released at Siggraph ’99 and really liked that, but I don’t know how much of a community it has now. Most likely I’d head to Premiere Pro since that’s most likely where a lot of FCP users are likely to go, and if the community builds, then so will the support for the app from Adobe. Plus, I already have it as part of the Production Suite, and it would be nice to see what benefits there are to staying within the Adobe suite since I heavily use After Effects and Photoshop.

    But I’m waiting a couple of months for the dust to settle and see what/if Apple has to say by then.

    I made a video series when I was new to Adobe and Premiere Pro. I got to ask about all the things that confused me. I think you might find it worthwhile: https://tv.adobe.com/show/switching-to-adobe-premiere-pro-cs5
