  • A Filter for blending 3D layers?

    Hey All,

I’m looking for a means to do what “Compound Arithmetic” almost does. I’ve got some vector-based artwork, and want to keep it that way. At the same time, I want to texture the art by blending it with a raster-based texture file, ideally through the help of a filter I can copy/paste to all my layers. Now, “Compound Arithmetic” does just that, except in a 3D world the texture is not linked to the layer; rather, it’s as though you’re seeing a stationary texture through the art. The problem this raises is that when the camera moves in a 3D world, the layers move accordingly but the texture within remains stationary.

Short of pre-compositing every single layer with the textured file, is there a way to do what I’m trying to do? Hope this all makes sense and I appreciate the help. Thanks.

I am not sure of the effect you are going for. If you apply compound arithmatic to a layer, convert the layer to 3d and move in 3d space, the texture stays with the layer as the camera moves in 3d space. Is this not what you want?

Thanks for the reply Mike. What you’re describing is what I WANT to have happen, but when I apply compound arithmatic to a 3D layer, the texture stays with the camera instead of the layer.

Thanks for the reply Dave. Yes, pre-composing a layer with the texture would do what I want, but that’s exactly what I want to avoid having to do. Every layer will have this texture applied, so I’m looking for a filter-based means of doing the same thing to all 30-60 layers; I’d have to pre-compose each layer individually to get the same effect. Again, the artwork is vector-based and I want to keep it that way, hence the desire to blend it with a raster-based texture in AE instead of Photoshop.

That really doesn’t help Dave. Obviously I know of a way to accomplish what I need to do, but what I’m in search of here is a more efficient way to accomplish the same thing. Thanks though.
