hey everyone, im a noobie so bear with me.
i been using sony vegas platinum 9 to make an AMV and i got two main problems:

    a) my file is about 3:30 long with 78 clips (including subclips) ive noticed that in the timeline a lot of my clips go blank like it wont read. If i go to project media and scroll down 1 at a time for them to load then delete a clip off the timeline and ctrl+z to refresh, some of them re-appear. But i can never have all clips loaded, always some of them blank which leads me to believe i got too many? wtf? Also when i added the clips and put them in they were fine. Another note, the clips are .avi but i downloaded all the codecs so it should work but doesnt.

    b) secondly when i try to render it the % gets stuck while the ETA just grows. I tried prerendering just a 5 sec selection but after about 10 mins it was still on 0% with no ETA…

if someone could help me out that would be awesome. Thanks.

extra info: im running a core duo 2.4ghz, 3g ram, 512mb nvidia, dual 140g hd.

first off – try rendering a wmv file. see if that works. also make sure your source files are on the same directory as SV.

    where does this get you???

    Hi Ben,

78 events and 3’30” (or do you mean 3h30′?) is certainly not to much for Vegas Movie Studio. However, from your story I get the bad feeling that your footage is made with a kind of tropical codec. What kind of avi is used to make your footage?

i mean 3min 30seconds. The .avi are made from a ripping program off dvd’s that i own and it says the format is just xvid .avi so i dont see why that would be wierd, im going to try put the clips in the same directory as vegas as suggested before and then i’ll reply again with the results.

ok so i moved my media files to a new folder i named “project Media” which is in the sony vegas folder now. I was wondering if there was a quick way to recapture all my media now that they have been moved rather then having to go and find each clip one by one.

This would be a pain as i had duplicate names that where in a bunch of different folders before (the ripper program would not let you choose an output name) now i’ve got rid of all the extra folders so i have for example cha1121.avi and cha1121(2).avi. Im hoping all of them being in one folder will help the situation.

Hey guys thanks for the suggestions so far:

-As for the codec type; the clips are ripped from dvd’s in xvid .avi format

    -The length is 3min30sec

-I tried .wmv rendering but still no good. I tried moving all the clips into the same directory as sony vegas – putting them into a subfolder called “project media” except now it wants me to replace all the clips because the files location has been moved. Is there a way to select new project media location? or am i going to have to reselect all 78 clips? Its doable, just a pain.

thanks for the help so far guys, im hoping i can get this fixed, so annoying as when i added the clips and put them on the timeline everything was ok but then as the project grew some of the clips started turning black and stop working in preview >.< hope we can sought this out. thanks.

Theo is on to something… the red flag went up when you said “I downloaded all the codecs”. This is never a good start. What codec do the files use?

My guess is that your clips use a codec that Vegas is having trouble editing. The solution is to convert them to format that is easier to edit. This will be a nightmare with 78 clips to replace.

Once you tell SV where the new location is, it should automatically pick them up.

if not, just load a previous set-up, and put your files back. I’m sorry if this has casued you problems. I meant copy the files – not move them :-B

At least we know its not to do with the render process / files.

You say the files are ripped from DVD in Xvid? That is a compressed format, and is not ideal.

You are much better off ripping them in their native format – and working with them in vegas.

Do you still have the source DVD?

I would avoid Xvid and Divx (essentailly the same process) as they are compression codecs used to convert Mpg files down to small sizes, suituable for the internet and/or storing large films on standard Cds.

Its a bit like working in a recording studio with mp3s! Use the original files in their original format, and these problems will disapear.

thanks man, i converted all the files into .mpg, basically redid the whole amv, and it works now! learn these lessons the hard way haha.

only problem now is rendering, it just stays at 0% while the eta grows, ive tried this for rendering as .avi and as .wmv, any ideas?

    thanks for the help again.
