    Hi All,
    A few questions:
    1) I know RAM preview is an issue for many. I have a 2.5 Quad Core XP system with 4GB RAM (Nvidia 9800 GT) and suddenly I cannot get RAM previews with HD projects. WHat are the optimal app settings for RAM preview?

    2) (Possibly related to #1)When I launch AFX CS3, 4 instances of AFterFX.exe show up in the Task Manager? Is this normal (maybe for a Quad Core machine?)

    3) Thinking ffdshow (which was installed with a few video apps which I can’t remember) was the culprit, I uninstalled it? Do I need this app for After Effects to work properly? (Premiere seems to work fine-even with AVCHD files.)

    Many thanks for your time/suggestions!

The four instances are the “MultiProcessing” feature in After Effects.
It’s ok ! if you have plenty of Ram !
4 GB Ram on (guessing) Win XP32 is not much when working with HD.
Are you working in 8-16-32 bit color depth ?
Do you get No Ram Preview at all or just a few frames ?

Try disabling MultiProcessing and let us know if it works.

Thanks, Jan. I figured it out by unchecking multiprocessing. Thanks for your quick reply!
Just curious, what sort of system specs are needed to take advantage of multiprocessing? I bought a quad core machine for this very purpose. (The Gateway FX box came with Vista 64-bit pre-installed. But I had to roll it back to XP Pro due to WAY too many incompatibilities with audio plugins.) I am disappointed it appears I cannot use this capability. Thanks again!

Adobe suggests 2GB Ram/Core, so you would need 8GB

    I’ve done a little testing with CS3 when we got it;
    on a quadcore with 8GB Ram + 2TB Raid0.

AE + multiprocessing used 7.5 GB Ram
AE + Nucleo Pro (multiprocessing plug-in) required 4-5 GB Ram

in some cases Nucleo rendered the compositions faster with less memory requirements, not always… but never slower.

    but… using 8 GB will require a 64 bit OS (Vista64 or XP64)
There are a lot of incompatibilities when using 64bit,
time for software writers to start writing for X64,
but until then … see what works for you.

If you want to keep working in Vista32 I would suggest you buy Nucleo Pro, it will be better than AE’s multiprocessing but working with HD won’t leave you much headroom !
