  • A decent free countdown clock?

Posted by Joe Murray on November 11, 2005 at 2:05 pm

I’m doing an advert for broadcast which will need a clock on the front.
The FCP one may be acceptable but looks very amateurish.
I could make one but don’t want to reinvent the wheel.
So I’m looking for a down-loadable (preferably) free count down clock
    Any one know of one?

    Thanks in advance

    This is a FAQ.

    1. There used to be several animated academy countdown leaders on the FCP install disks:

    FCP Install Disc >
    Extras folder >
Head Leaders for Cinema Tools folder >
    Leader Clips folder >
Choose one and import it into FCP.

    2. Go here:

    https://www.deepmagicstudios.com/FCP/

And roll down to the “Final Cut Pro Universal Leaders” section, download your choice, and import.

Matte…those are film countdown leaders that go from 10 to 2. Like you used to see in front of film you watched in school.

Not at ALL what Joe is looking for.

I hear that the TOO MUCH TOO SOON plugin package has a clock. And that is a free set if I recall…

    We must read differently.

You go back and read the Q again.
I’ll go back and read the Q again.

And Joe can write and TELL us who’s the “winner”.

AH. I was wrong. And I still think you are wrong. You are pointing to FILM countdowns. NOW I think I get it…he wants a SLATE Countdown. The 10-2 countdown for broadcast TV, that on some ITV and BBC shows, I notice also contain slate information. Ahhhh.

I don’t know of another one existing out there. But someone might. So I’ll just shut up now.

    YESSSSS!!

I need these “wrong” answers to make my occasional “right” guesses look SPECIAL.

    Thanks for your continued support.

    Now, Now Chaps!

    No squabling out there.

Yes the fellow that I am after is not academy leader but a slate that counts down from 30 seconds and cuts to black
    at 3.
Now back to your corners and come out fighting………..

I don’t see how these two of your statements match up.

The FCP coundown is 10 seconds.
If you need 30 (?!) seconds why did you say the FCP one is acceptable?

Except in a satellite down-link or network cuing situation (in which cases the countdown is supplied by the SENDER, not on the actual tape) I’ve never seen the need for a 30 second pre-roll.

(Or did you really mean 10 second?)

Just curious, why does it matter what a countdown clock looks like? it’s not seen by the broadcast audience. actually, we don’t even use them here, we just have strict timecode guidelines which eliminate the need for the countdown.

but if I did need one, who cares what it looks like? Unless you really want to impress the engineers with a pretty clock. Just curious.

Maybe in the US, but the tape would probably get rejected for air here in the UK. I still clock all broadcast shows with a 30″ clock into part. Who knows, that will probably change with tapeless delivery.

Out of interest, it took me 5 minutes to make one in motion 😉

    A Fair point Walter,

I couldn’t care less what the engineers think, but I do worry about my inexperienced clients who have read the “Boy Scout Book of Compliance”
and may get all antsy if they see a numerical countdown. Also, a proper clock just looks nicer, like a watch with hands as opposed to one with just digits.

A30 sec countdown is normal in the UK with the program starting at 10:00:00
