A compelling reason to get out of the business
Posted by Ross Hansberger on August 26, 2007 at 3:01 pmI recently stumbled across this post on craig’s list (atlanta).
I’m still shaking my head.
“I am looking for 2, very professional (important), highly qualified videographers to film for 8 hours next Friday and Saturday, Aug 31st-Sept 1st. Qualified applicants must have at least 2 years experience or bachelors, must posess their own HVX200 or better, and have internet demo reel and professional resume. Written or verbal references a plus. This will be a NON-PAYING assignment but we will be serving pizza and chicken for lunch both days (we ask that each crew member bring a side) and you will get the pride in knowing you were involved in such a meaningful and uplifting project (rap video). Must have own transportation (don’t come to us begging for gas money). Serious applicants only.”
Feel free to reply to his request, but do it quickly as I am sure he is getting a tremendous response from his add. But please remember to bring a side and for god’s sake be professional and don’t beg for gas!!!

August 26, 2007 at 3:12 pmI absolutely love the end. “Serious Applicants Only.” You know, because the entire thing smacks of a serious production, no?
I mean only a Serious Production would not pay anyone.
Only a Serious Production would offer to feed people pizza and chicken with no sides.
Only a Serious Production would make a point of not paying anything for gas.
Only a Serious Production would call a music video an “uplifting project.”
Only a Serious Production would demand an HVX-200 or better for a non-paying project.
Only a Serious Production would demand that you bring all the bells and whistles to a project and expect nothing in return.

August 26, 2007 at 4:17 pmYou needn’t get out of the business because of stuff like this.
The one(s) answering this will likely be the ones leaving the business soon enough, so no need to fret.
Also, I can’t say that I know anyone who makes their living from reading and getting their jobs from Craig’s List or other job boards — even the COW’s. Sure, you can get the odd job here and there using lists but the real business is done the old fashioned way, where there is no substitute for hard work, perseverance, building connections and knowing your market, etc., etc.
But hey, pizza and chicken and I get to pay my own gas, too??? Now that sounds, well, er, um, that sounds worth the flight to Atlanta. “Kathlyn, pack up the camera, sweetie. I’ll get everything else ready. We’re doing a meaningful rap video! Wahoo!”

August 26, 2007 at 4:35 pmHey Ron. Please read “a compelling reason to get out of the business” with tongue in cheek. Craig’s list job board is a wonderful morning read with coffee. I like to read it as one would read the daily funnies.
I look forward to seeing you and Kathy here in Atlanta enjoying that uplifting pizza and chicken.

No, no, no, the uplifting pizza and chicken is up here at Lake Lanier! You stop by Popeye’s for the Chicken and Cardamuro’s for the Pizza and then uplift it to the boat whereupon you beach it on an island in the Lake and offer praise for the good food and good friends to share it with! 🙂

August 26, 2007 at 4:52 pmSee, now here I was with a bunch of side dishes, wondering what to do with them.
This is the best news I’ve heard all week.

Ron,
I think this guy is getting “a bum rap.” Come on, he’s creating the first “meaningful and uplifting” rap video ever on planet Earth. This could very well reshape art as we know it…
And, he’s paying with pizza and chicken… Keep in mind, our government isn’t printing pepperoni and chicken tenders like they’re going out of style–food items are probably appreciating, while greenbacks are going down, down, down…

August 26, 2007 at 6:04 pmLMAO!!! Yeah, and I wont be begging for gas money because I just filled up the tank last night and I’m just itching to deplete it into the ozone. If anyone wants a lift, let me know and I’ll pick you up! We can eat the sides on the way!
ROAD TRIP!!!!!
Hey Ross, that’s gotta be one of the funniest Craig’s List posts I’ve ever seen. How would anyone of the face of the Earth that owns a $6k camera (for just the camera itself, mind you!) would shoot a rap video for chicken and pizza??!!! LMFAO!!!!!!!!
My vote for top 10 posts of the year. Awesome.

August 26, 2007 at 11:44 pmOMG, you guys, I HAVE an HVX200 AND can pay my own gas. Will anybody give me a referral? I really don’t want to miss this gig.
I think it’s safe to say that the guy that made that post has a very sad, sad life.

Dear Producer of inspiring Rap project.
I can vouch for John Davidson’s incredible skill in his field. He is an amazing entertainer who made his Broadway debut in 1964 but is probably best known for his 80 appearances hosting The Tonight Show on NBC. He has developed an on-going Vegas show with Vicki Carr that continues to wow audiences to this day. Though Videography came late to John, his wealth of experience as an Entertainer and amazing singer should prove worthy for your inspiring project. His HVX-200 does meet your requirements and he is also willing to use a battery so the camera will be turned on during your production.
Mr. Davidson is also willing to provide a side of mashed potatoes for two other crew members on one of the days of photography. His Yugo is full of gas and is available for stunt work if needed.
Thank you for your consideration.
