I am working on a new 9:16 Format DVD. My first attempt at the widesccreen format. I recently had a video crew shoot for me. They shot 9×16 format on an Ikegami. I have tried various presets in Final Cut 4.5 for 9:16…. when I import their footage (which Quicktime Info tells me is 720×480 format), I appears in the 9×16 ratio, but it does not fill the frame. I can go to “Modify” and “Scale to Sequence,” but I think this is not the best way to go, Could anyone advise me on the best way to set up the sequence and import their footage to fill the 9:16 frame? I will be later importing some of my own video shot on a 3 CCD Panasonic in “Cinema” mode as well as many still images I will prepare in PhotoShop. I am confused by the anamorphic and other settings in FCP. I want to end up with a 9:16 format DVD.

    Thanks,

    Todd

P.S.: The video guys shot my footage on an Ikegami.

16:9 footage is still 720×480. You should be choosing Anamorphic for both Capture and Sequence settings. I’m not sure what you mean by “it’s not filling the frame”. What does that mean?

To clarify what I meant by “not filling the frame….” I have tried various sequence presets in FCP. When I import the 9×16 video that was shot then drop it in the timeline, it is the right shape (9×16) but surrounded by black on all sides. I’d say it is about 1/3 or 1/4 smaller than the preset 9×16 frame. If I Scale to Sequence it enlarges to full-frame top to bottom, but still has thin black bars left and right.

Are your viewer and canvas windows set to ‘fit to window’? If they’re set to a percentage less than that you’re going to see space around the video footage in those windows.

If the footage you’re importing truly is 16:9 then all you need to do is check the anamorphic box in the log and capture window, make sure your sequence is set to DV NTSC Anamorphic and drag the clips to the timeline. If that doesn’t make your video fill your viewer and canvas windows then there is something else contributing to your problem.

Sometimes corrupt FCP preference files will make capturing and displaying the correct aspect ratio troublesome. It’s happened to me in the past with 16:9 not being captured or being displayed properly. Trashing my FCP preference files cured the problem. Try trashing them before proceeding if the above workpath fails.

I forgot to add that your capture preset should also be set to DV NTSC Anamorphic instead of the standard DV NTSC. This is in addition to activating the anamorphic checkbox in the log and capture window.
