So it’s like creating a movie trailer but you reveal the ending…never mind, I guess some movie trailers already do that. This would be a great assignment for film students.

I took a look at this and I think I’ll pass. To do something truly inspired with hokey public domain footage that’s not just a trailer parody would require some deep thought and hard work. Their “Metropolis” example was horrible, and ironic, in terms of the film’s history of being subjected to merciless cuts to reduce run times.
Hey, Is “Battkeship Potempkin” clear for PD? I’ve alwasy thought that would be a good film to re-make, if done right. No, you can;t do it “right” in five minutes… but maybe …. something.. (eyes go unfocused, wanders off mumbling…)

haha, you are right – the Metropolis example does suck a lot! Anyways, most of the entries we received so far are awesome… Battleship Potemkin is in the PD and up at the Internet Archive

Question for Tilman: can we add new, custom audio in the re-edit, or must all audio come from the original PD source film, and no other sources?

This is an excellent question. As long as it helps tell the story and there is no copyright attached (to that audio) it should be fine. This is for the “True Edit Award”.
For the “Fun Edit Award” things are even more liberal… you can get away with all sorts of inserted visuals/sounds.Sorry again for spoiling your appetite with my shocking noobish edit of Metropolis. I’m glad you might still join the fun and look forward to your edit!
