August 28, 2007 at 2:23 amYes, the 900’s tapes will play on a 1200 and the 900 can only use Medium size cassettes.

August 29, 2007 at 7:32 am900 have more condensed record head 9 microns vs the Varicam;s 18 so the 900 gets 33 minutes on a Med cass. were as the Varicam gets 33 mins on a Large cass.
This is not the same on LP on DV that causes problems with playback and drop outs.
The 1200 and 1400 can playback both tapes.

Panasonic also made a DVCPro100 HD deck, the 130DC. It will play back Varicam tapes, 18 microns, but not anything recorded on the 1200A, 1400 decks or from the 900 camera, which are all 9 microns.

August 29, 2007 at 1:59 pmI had this happen too. I shot some footage for a client and he didn’t know that older DVCProHD decks would not play the 9micron tapes. He was freakin’ out that all the tapes were bad. Always wise to check when you shoot for clients not familiar with the differences.
