Shooting in HDV, I’m about to do a green screen shot and want to try something new. If I turned the camera on a 90 degree angle to shoot a head to toe shot of the talent (making the shot 9×16 instead of 16×9), then rotate it in post, I should have better control over scaling the footage to many different sizes for a virtual set, particularly since the final out put will be SD 4×3. Does this make sense to anyone?

Yes, this is a common trick to get more resolution for chromakey use. Go for it!

People do it all the time, there is even an illustration in the COW magazine of this being done. I would only ask myself if the extra bit of resolution and screen size gained is really worth the extra effort, or if I can just scale the shot as it will be finally used, right during acquisition, and will that be good enough. That’s a subjective decision.

It can be a nice trick, but remember that moving the camera far or close to the subject using the same lens angle will give you a better sense of space than just zoom in-out (or re-frame in post, in this scenario). So, if you have the time to do an extra shot, move your tripod.

    I hope this helps
