i had to create a DVD for a client and they just wanted to put in the DVD to the player and not ajust any settings. so i created this DVD in AE just of stills in 864×468 then made a pre comp as 720 x 486 and squished the video and render. brought it into compressor and DVDSP and made a 4×3 DVD. when it is displayed on a plasma it would show it as 16×9 aspect ratio. no i want to back up on FCSP how do I do this and what would my settings be going into a beta sp deck?????/

sorry that i was not clear, i want it as 16×9 on the plasma. i design the dvd as a squshed 16×9 on a 4×3 dvd to trick the aspect ratio and when it would be played back on a plasma that’s 16×9 this part of it is good. know how would i make a beta sp back up of this if the comp is 864×468? what settings would i use?

MPEG-2 is a unique codec and DVD is a unique form of media… put them together and you get a unique sort of mess. You can import a 4:3 MPEG-2 and tell DVDSP to stretch it to 16:9 in the track settings, but that’s not the ‘proper’ way to do it. MPEG-2 has a bunch of header information in the video stream, one of which is the aspect ratio. If your footage is 16:9 then you should encode it as a 16:9 MPEG-2. In QuickTime player this 16:9 MPEG-2 will have an odd frame size (720×404) but that is normal and correct.
Technically this won’t change the way the video is displayed on most set top boxes, but it definitely can change the way it is displayed on computers/software DVD players and perhaps even some set top boxes.
