854 x 480 Square Pixel – Little help here
Hi,
I am working with a client that is providing some elements. I received the first element and the aspect ratio is 854×480 pixels with square pixels.
When I import the clip into Final Cut Pro it requests that the sequence be 854×480 with square pixels… So, I did that.
The problem is when I play the clip I can only see it play on the canvas inside Final Cut Pro. I cannot see it PLAY by looping through my firewire deck to a monitor. I can only see the first frame as a still and then when the clip stops playing it refreshes to the frame it stops on.
Obviously I cannot output to tape with this etc… I am confused about what they have given me and how to make it work. I am supposed to be assembling a 16:9 show reel for a meeting. this will play back on 16:9 plasma monitors.
If their aspect ratio is incorrect what should it be?

What they’ve given you is a non-existent video format. It’s square pixel standard definition widescreen. It should 720×480 anamorphic.

854×480 is a in fact very “existent”. 720×480 anamorpic measures out to be 854 x 480 in square pixels. where you went wrong was allowing FCP to alter your composition settings automatically. If you had not done that you would have found that the 854 clip would have fit perfectly in your composition.

There is no such format as 854×480. There is no square pixel format in DV. DV NTSC is the only format that uses 480 vertical pixels. It is always 720 horizontally and always uses D1 pixels. Cobbling something together is a square pixel format for video is a really bad idea.

I’ve never had any isssues with it. havn’t seen any televisions exploding. If I was dealing with video only and no graphics I would agree with you 100%. adding graphics however into an NTSC anamorphic timeline works best at the above stated resolution.

Actually let me ammend that & say when working out of after effects this works best for the cleanest possible graphics. I would never set up a composition in FCP as 854×480. Insofar as that’s concerned you’re correct. there is no 854×480 native to FCP or any other edit system.

That works fine for graphics. There is no indication in the poster’s message that he’s talking about graphics. Nor should he built a sequence to that non-existent video format.

Hi Tom,
Just to clarify…you mentioned D1…actually the spec is 720×486 for D1.
