  • 8 Port Sata Controller Slot Configurations for G5 with Kona 2

Posted by Clay Walker on July 12, 2005 at 6:11 pm

I am trying to install a Tempo-X eSATA 8 controller into my G5.

My slot configurations are as follows: (top to bottom)

    Slot 4 – Atto 4
    Slot 3 – Kona 2
    Slot 2 – Tempo X
    Slot 1 – ATI CARD

The problem is that when I install the Tempo X card into the G5, it no longer recognizes the Kona 2 card.

If I move the cards around, it is my understanding that the Atto card will lose 20% of its throughput.

So, I have read a lot of posts about how great the low-cost SATA solutions are but the questions are –

    What is your slot configuration?
Is the Tempo X truly 133 MHZ?
Can you run scsi & sata controllers together?

    Thanks.

According to install instructions, the Tempo card will not work in Slot 4…

so here’s my slot config that is working very well.

    Slot 1 – ATI X800 XT
    Slot 2 – empty
    Slot 3 – Tempo – X8
    Slot 4 – AJA Kona 2

Don’t have an ATTO card installed yet. Was going to try it out in Slot 2 but haven’t had time to reconfigure things.

    Best,
    Harley

[Harley Michailuck] “According to install instructions, the Tempo card will not work in Slot 4…”

Apparently if you remove the cable that attaches to the second internal SATA drive (if you have one) in your G5, then it will fit.

But, I want to keep my Atto in slot 4… it is not shared.

If I put the Tempo X card in Slot 3 and the Kona in 2, the Kona-2 card will not show up there either…

Well, the problem is that my Kona-2 card died the moment I installed the Tempo-X card. I don’ t know why as I did not touch it.

Working with AJA support, I was unable to have it work again with no other PCI cards installed.

But, I have a second Kona-2 that I have installed and it is working alongside the Sonnet card…

I have not read all of your posts. The Sonnet Card wants to be in slot 2 or 3, and the Kona 2 wants to be in Slot 4. I have never tried using BOTH a Sonnet and ATTO UL4d, I have no idea if this would work or if there would be any conflicts, but if by some miracle it did work, the Sonnet and the ATTO would have to be in Slot 2 and 3, and the Kona 2 in Slot 4.

I can assure you that the Kona 2 and the Sonnet Tempo eSATA 8 port work fine together.

Yes, it would take all day to read my posts… sorry for all of the posts

Well, I may have a miracle taking place.

    This is my configuration:

    Slot 4 – Atto 4
    Slot 3 – Kona 2
    Slot 2 – Tempo X
    Slot 1 – ATI CARD

and it seems to be working fine, so far. My biggest problem was that my Kona-2 got fried when I put in the Sonnet card for some reason.

Here are my bench tests. Keep in mind the following. My Huge drive is 1.2 TB and has 100 GB free. The Sata drives are empty:

If I have any Kona performance issues, I will try moving the cards around as you have suggested….
