I’ve heard rumblings of an update sometime during november. I’d hold off for a little if you can.

[hdfilmmaker] “Should I, just cause I can? I am wanting to order the new 3ghz 8core Macs. Should I wait? or is this the machine of the future?”

If you need it today, buy it today. If you don’t, then don’t. I haven’t needed a new machine since we took delivery of our Mac Pro Quad 3.0 early this year, or maybe it was the end of last year.

When I need a new machine, I’ll purchase it then. But waiting for the next evolution of the Apple computers is a waste of time. There are always rumors of new machines, especially now that Intel is the chip maker and you can follow their information much more easily than Apple’s.

Obviously Apple was wise to hold off until Leopard until releasing any sort of a new desktop. When that machine will actually be released is anybody’s guess. I would say sometime between today and NAB in April. Most likely not before the Apple Studio 2 updates are out and maybe not until Adobe After Effects works on Leopard.

Yes, if you need a new machine now then get one. But Apple does upgrade computers now and again and I don’t consider tracking when new systems are due to be a waste of time (especially considering that a new 8-Core Mac Pro can cost as much as it does now days).

If it were me looking to get a new computer, if I could wait for a month or two, I would because of the rumors. If I needed it now, I’d go for it.

I’m in the market for a new suite as-well,, but can afford to wait. Rumors I hear point to a mid-Nov hardware release.. others point to January…

As mentioned above,, if you can wait, wait.
If not, get what’s available that will suit your needs.

I just know how frustrating it can be to buy something, only to have a new, better product released a week or two later at the same price point! But such is the way with computers!

these guys keep decent tabs on what’s going on in the apple rumor realm: http://www.macrumors.com
always remember though,, this is a ‘rumor’ site!

    Hi,

    i bought a 8core this summer….
well, out of th e box i was disappointed. Why? Because it looked the same as my od G5dual 1.8..
on the other hand i thought it’d be a MAJOR improvement over my old system an a MAJOR improvement over say the QUAD2.66Ghz.
Sure the 8core is fastest, but is it worth spending over 100Euros more than the 2.66Ghz?
Yes and no. In my case yes, because i have compressor rendering while working in Motion and FCP and i can work with no performance drawbacks…
No if you don’t have many apps running at CPU consuming tasks.
Even No if you edit in FCP and Export it via Compressor from there – FCP is “locked” while exporting…

So: Leopard and hopefully a FCS2 Update will use all of the 8cores permanently..
Or: Apple is introducing the new machines where you can add up to 4 Graphic Cards and will try to do renderings via the GPU for Realtime Things and leave FCP Renders as is..

To be honest, i told a friend not to buy the 8core because he hasn’t too many situations where he needs compressor, FCP and Motion or whatever running at the same time.
This 1000Euros+ isn’t worth spending on a computer – rather save for a decent camera..
And i told him to wait as long as he can, for the new macs will have new “internal” structure, maybe with a hd-dvd drive, maybe with multi-graphics support etc…

Still if you can’t or don’t want to wait – get a quad 2.66Ghz and a new one in a year or two from now and you have a decent 2nd Machine for working…

    just my thoughts

    cheers
