April 25, 2008 at 10:01 pmThere is a new firmware update that addresses these type of kernel panics on the new Mac Pros like yours… Check Software Update and see if that comes up. If not, Apple has this available on their Support site.

April 27, 2008 at 2:00 amHi,
I would contact Rudy at AJA tech support. For a Kona LSe and Seritek card he recommended the following:
Go to: about this mac -> more info -> hardware -> model identifier.
For v3.1 Mac Pro: install Kona in slot 2 and Seritek in slot-4.For V1.1 or 2.1 Mac Pro: install the Kona in slot-3 and Seritek in slot-4.
Then go to: /system/library/core services; launch the expansion slot
utility. Configure the PCIe slots for 16:1:4:4 (option 2).Best Wishes,
Mitch

April 27, 2008 at 9:00 amCheers Mitch!
I emailed Aja last week (not Rudy in particular, though) but haven’t received a reply yet.
All these possible solutions are very interesting but sooooo confusing! 🙂 So many variables so little time!
Todd.

April 27, 2008 at 3:04 pmWHile Mitch’s advice is good, the new MacPros do not need to run the PCIe slot config as there is more bandwidth than in earlier 2007 8-cores.
Here’s some pictures:

April 27, 2008 at 4:37 pmHi Jeremy,
The email from Rudy was actually this:
Go to: about this mac -> more info -> hardware -> model identifier.
For v3.1 Mac Pro: install Kona in slot 2 and Seritek in slot-4.For V1.1 or 2.1 Mac Pro: install the Kona in slot-3 and Seritek in slot-4.
Then go to: /system/library/core services; launch the expansion slot
utility. Configure the PCIe slots for 16:1:4:4 (option 2).
I interpreted that as choose the slots based on your model and then run the utility. It looks he meant that slot configuration is only required for v1.1 or v2.1.
Thanks!
Mitch

May 13, 2008 at 12:06 pmJust thought I’d post a final update: the machine went off to the workshop and after much discussion between myself and my support, we realised what the matter was. The background to this solution is that I’ve set my machine up to be used by other freelance editors, so I thought I’d be really cunning and force people to use only one password free, non-administrative account. On top of that, I also put restrictions on which apps. could be run. I know, by and large, that non-admin can’t do anything too ruinous but disk utility can be run and an idle editor will drift through the applications folder!
Now it turns out, that the solution was to not use ‘parental controls’ on the account. With this control unchecked in the accounts pane FCP behaves loverly! 🙂 It’s probably trying to access something that gets automatically disabled with parental control but I didn’t see anything in the list that could look like it would stall FCP. I only unchecked the stuff like disk util and Safari, ichat, ical, etc.
To stop people getting to an app, I’ve created an ‘Admin Util’ folder inside Apps one and put a no-access for FCP USER account on the folder and it’s contents. Then I just drop the odd possibly-dangerous-in-bored-hands app in there and all is relatively safe! I hope. Thanks to all for their advice, though.
