    Hello,

I am assisting an editor on a big project and in the next day or two I will be receiving some hard drives with footage taken from the following:

    8 cameras rolling at one point – 2 lipsticks (HD), 2 reds, 1 phantom, one 1080 vericam, 2 P2s.

I believe the delivery will most likely be to HDCAM but not 100% sure at this point…I am also not sure what different frame rates / formats all of this footage will be in. I know those are very important variables to find out about and I’m sure as more info comes in I will be able to update this post accordingly but for now I just want to know what / if any thoughts you guys might have in terms of settings up and work flow for this project.

I am thinking to purchase the Gluetools plugin to handle all of the Phantom footage and then just do batch conforms in Compressor to convert all of that into 1920×1080 – I also will use ClipFinder to do the same conversion to all of the RED footage – but will all these other formats of footage and different frame rates I am beginning to get a little bit freaked out. I am thinking to conform everything to 1920×1080 @ 24fps and then when its time to deliver to HDCAM 1080i60 do that conversion with AE adding pulldown & fields?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

    thanks in advance

    cheers

    Sean

    First, i have NO idea.
    Second, you are an ASSISTANT.
So get the editor and discuss things with him, or chances are big you get into trouble.
If you want to impress him, be my guest, (others will chime in to help you, i’m sure), but this is not going to be easy…

As Bouke mentioned, talk to the editor in charge of the edit and if there is a Post Production Supervisor, talk to them too. You really should not be making any of these decisions, he / she should. They should tell you exactly how they want the footage converted and laid out.

That’s what I’ve done with my edit assist anytime she has a question, she asks me before she does the next task.

Ok totally understand Wlater I jus twas hoping for some thoughts to start but obviously i need to provide more info – And I just spoke to the boss – no editor assigned yet and the thought is that we will work in 1080 24p and then when its time to deliver conform in AE to 1080i 60 for HDCAM layoff.

Maybe I will just start a proper post when i have gathered all the info and know exactly what I have questions about.

again my apologies friends ; )
    cheers

No, you can just re-post in this thread when you’ve got the info. Especially when working with other folks you need to talk to the ones “in charge” as they may already have a routine, a plan, a way of working that they want you to conform to. The best way to get yourself in trouble is to assume anything.

    have fun!

any video card can add 3:2 PD on output, so 24P->108060i is a non-issue.

if you have any 60i/30p footage, I’d recommend setting the TL to that. placing 24p footage in, FCP will add 3:2 PD on the fly. you really don’t want to try to downcovnert 60i/30P to 24 if you don’t need to. you may also find the phantom footage is high speed, so that will be a beast unto itself.

hopefully you have matching TC, or at least they slated the cams together for every new roll.if not, good luck, hope you’re getting paid well.

Sounds like a lot of the jobs I end up working on. Like everyone else has said so far, once you have an editor talk with them about it. Second thing is making sure your timeline is setup right. If there is ANY 29.97 footage I would work in that frame rate, not 23.98. Third, since you have so many different formats you are going to have to choose a codec to work in, maybe go with ProRes HQ? Fourth thing is the RED footage. When I first started working with RED in a mixed media project I used to do what you mentioned, using clip finder then rendering out selects to ProRes. This can take FOREVER. It’s a lot easier to just bring import the full size proxies and work with those in FCP, if you have a fast enough machine you can edit them in real time when you set your RT to unlimited. Just render when your cut is done. Good luck.

    Hello Walter, Bouke & friends,

I have included a screen grab below which shows the format of all the footage we will be working with – the great majority of it is RED.

So we will be delivering an HDCAM tape (1080i) in the end and I am curious to get people’s thoughts / opinions on what to do in order to be able to edit with all these mixed formats. I do not have an editor to talk to about this but I obviously DO know how we need to deliver and I have performed massive batch renders on 4 new MacPro’s to conform all of the RED footage – so i know what I have to work with here.

I really appreciate all of your time and expertise and am very much looking forward to your responses : )

    cheers

    Sean
