I shoot a lot of commercials with HPX and HVX. We almost always shoot in 720PN, edit in FCP 23.98 timeline and then convert the final to 29.97 for tape. We rarely have problems with image anomalies like bad motion. Happens every once in a while and we work around it. With 250 or so jobs under my belt with this method, I don’t really need a better solution. It works and it saves space.

But I am shooting a doc for pbs and festivals right now and don’t know what I should do for best outcome. I’m thinking that I ought to shoot 720P 24 (59.94) so that the final can be delivered for TV without any issue.

Is this right? Should I edit in a 59.94 timeline, and if so, can I send a 59.94 progressively scanned final? If I shoot 24p, I need to set UB mode to “frame” so that FCP can recognize the metadata that says, “drop frames (x)” but do I need to do anything else upon import? Like check or don’t check “remove dropped frames” in the import p2 log and transfer?

A response from someone who has shot a doc for TV and for festivals using HVX or HPX in 24p and who really knows an answer would be appreciated.

If you shoot 24pN and need to deliver 59.94, you just need to calculate the drop frame equivalent for broadcast (festivals won’t make a difference, unless you need specific timing).

I’d shoot 24pN, save the space and cards and then layoff 59.94 when the time comes and that should happen without issue. Do you layoff via firewire or via HDSDI? What format are you planning for delivery?
