    Hi,

For those of you working with 720p60/25 (25 fps) materials, how do you record back to the AJ-HD1400 VTR ? The problem is that this VTR does not supporting recording in 720p25 format but can record in 720p50 but FCP currently does not playback 720p50.

So far I’ve only been able to record back to the VTR in 720p60 mode on the VTR using 59.94 timecode.

Any idea how I can record back to the VTR using 25 fps ?

You start by changing the System Freq to 50/25, on the 1200A deck I believe it’s Menu item 25. You MUST turn off the deck and turn it back on after making this change for it to take. If you simply change it, it will not switch over to 50/25.

Then you need to change the general System to 720p from 1080i, I believe that’s in the 000 series of menus on the 1200A.

We’re laying off a series right now to 1080i/50, but that’s 50 fields or 25 frames per second. It’s working perfectly off our 1200A.

    Hi Wally,

Is your sequence at 1080i ?

For my case, my sequence is at 720p as it was injested that way. I can playback nicely using the AJA Kona2 720p25 video playback selection but the AJ-HD1400 VTR doesn’t record in 720p25, only 720p50 but I can’t get FCP to playback 720p50 via the Kona 2 although there is a 720p50 video playback selection there.

Right now the only way I can lay the 720p60 @ 25fps sequence to the AJ-HD1400 VTR is by setting it to 59/60 system frequency but the timecode then becomes 29.97fps. Visually it looks ok but because of the 29.97fps timecode I cannot easily make a 625i PAL downconvert dub without first doing a 525i NTSC downconvert dub and then do a standards conversion.

Probably best to upconvert on the VTR itself to 1080i but then for those variable frame rate shots, it has to be injested at 720p inorder to get the fast/slow motion. Do you know if the variable frame flags are lost if we upconvert on the VTR ?

Use KonaTV or the VTR exchange App.
( they will properly place the flags in the timecode stream also!!!)

Note that the format is actually 720p50 however so the cadence is 2:2:2:2

You can create a 50p sequence in FCP via my XML workflow.
Unfortunately my website is blocked here (it is defined as
spam) so I can’t post the link. If you google for “720p50”
or “720p50 fcp” you will find the article very quickly.

You can than drop the 720p25 clips into the 720p50 sequence
and render everything. FCP will apply a 2:2 pulldown and you
are able to output to the AJ-HD1400 via SDI using AJA or BDM
    video cards …

You can’t drag your entire 720p25 sequence to the 720p50
sequence as FCP doesn’t allow nesting with different frame
rates. Hold the command key when dragging the 720p25
sequence to your 720p50 sequence. You will than add the
entire content including all edits, transitions and effects to
    the 720p50 sequence …
