720p vs 720pn REAL differences
Posted by Daniel C. slagle on October 17, 2007 at 2:44 pmWhat am I losing going to 720pn the manual is not very clear on this. Well… at least not in a way that I see would effect my videos.
I do not understand having to do a pull down but it looks like I lose that ability using the native format. Correct?

October 17, 2007 at 3:52 pmPulldown is a way to fit a 24p signal into a format that a 29.97 tape or TV can playback. As you are going to a solid state memory card, this is not necessary so pulldown is no longer needed. In 24pN you record exactly the 24 frames per second you need with no filler thus saving precious storage space. Here’s a primer on pulldown:

October 17, 2007 at 7:23 pmSo let me get this right, if you are shooting 720P 24 then there are 3/2 frames added? I think I understand, I was shooting something in 720p 24 and then had to go through the Frame Rate Converter in FCP, it would be great if I could do 720p 24pn but I am using HD Monitor Pro into a Mac Book Pro and this signal dosent come through the firewire so I have to go regular 24 and then do a frame rate conversion. After shooting in 720 24 and my end product would be a SD DVD which workflow should I go through , should I even shoot in 720 24 if my end result will be SD DVD or should I shoot in 30 or 60? Sorry still trying to wrap my head around this.

October 18, 2007 at 9:25 amO.K. I understand that for 24p… It makes sense. So for 720/30pn would I have to drop a frame when making DVD’s and the like? I assume compressor would just take care of that for me on the “down rez” (if that is the right word)???
Let me give you the scenario and see if this helps. I shoot a lot of video that, most of which goes to the web. I USED TO convert my cheap 1080i footage to a progressive Windows or Quicktime encode. Converting the 1080i to 480i for a DVD no problem. Now… I will be shooting everything in 720pn and using about the same exports for the web. No problem there either. My concern was being that 720pn is well th ‘n’ that I would not be able to do a good conversion to SD (to make DVD’s) if I lost the pulldown ability. Does that make sense?
