  • 720P sequence being exported to DV Pal Tape – Quality is terrible

Posted by Craig Ricker on February 19, 2013 at 1:10 am

Just trying to find out the best way to go about getting my 720p sequences onto tape in a DV Pal format.

At the moment, I have been nesting the 720p sequence into a DV Pal sequence (field order set to “None”) and printing to tape.

Text though has heaps of messy pixels all around it and there are interlaced lines all through moving footage when viewed on a LCD TV. Is this just what happens when down converting HD to SD?

I have tried turning on maximum render quality in the sequence settings, as I noticed it appears that on export to tape it actually creates preview files before printing them to tape. (well thats what the little dialog box says its doing).

But it does not improve the quality at all.

    Any help appreciated

DV PAL is a pretty low quality format nowadays so I don’t know what you’re expecting. Also DV PAL is specced at interlaced lower field first so it probably won’t matter whether you’ve setup it as progressive. Modern TVs can’t always deal with interlacing that well, if you have access to a proper broadcast monitor it would probably look better.

If you add an I/O card you could down-convert while laying out to tape, this would yield better results.

Try taking your 720p master to AME, and compressing to DV-PAL, Interlaced, lower fields.

Then import that file into APP and lay out to tape.
