SD editor here with HD dilemma.

I need to create a 720p deliverable from high res jpeg source files (no original HD footage). Ideally, I’d be able to master a HD DVD/BR but other posts I’ve found say this is not yet possible with FCS2 (plus, I don’t have such recordable drives). Client wants to be able to view this on a HDTV, or at least the equivalent quality of this on a CPU. I’m not sure how I can deliver this?

Another challenge is I don’t have a HD monitor or deck to preview. I just have my SD monitor and 2 CPU monitors (1280×1024). Do computer monitors qualify as HD?

Is there a file/format spec that is equivalent to 720p that I could either demo on a computer or connect some how to a HD DVD/BR or PS3 device?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Well, I believe FCS2 is all you need. Since you don’t have a recordable HD DVD drive, let’s discuss the equivalent quality on his CPU.

Once, you’ve taken the pics into an HD 720 timeline in FCP and cut your project, and I would recommend a DVCPRO HD 720 60p setup; you can then Export> Using Quicktime Conversion>Quicktime movie>; under Options; uncheck Prepare for Intertnet Streaming, select DVCPRO HD720 60p under Video Settings> Compression Type and you now have an HD Quicktime file for your client.

No disc, no mess. Just make sure he has the latest version of Quicktime player on his CPU.

Thanks Dave. Those specs produced an image that looks comparable. Is this file played through QT on a CPU monitor technically the same viewing experience as on an HDTV?

Curious about the DVCPRO HD 720 60p. I found the “DVCPRO HD – 720p30” in easy setup. Interestingly, it defaults to Playback Output Video as “DVCPRO HD 720 60p.” I always thought that 720p used 30fps?

    Thanks again.

720P as a broadcast format is based on 60fps, though the HDV / DVCPRO-HD flavors offer 30 and 24.

Your client won’t be able to play that DVCPRO-HD file unless they have final cut pro installed. It only comes with final cut unfortunately.

If the video is not too long (under 30 minutes) you could author an HD-DVD burned to DVDR disc (via dvd studio pro) and that will play in HD from a Toshiba HD-DVD player. I have a few clients that I make those for on occasion.

I’ll try making a DVDR. Sounds like this method is not compatible with all HD-DVD players however.

This may sound like a novice question, but how are people getting their HD content from FCS2 to HDTVs if they aren’t going through a broadcast channel? What am I missing? I don’t want to connect an HD Deck to an HDTV.

Someone else suggested a PS3 via the USB input.

[ktacos] “Sounds like this method is not compatible with all HD-DVD players however.”

Actually is pretty much is these days.

There are occasions where it may not play from an xbox 360 drive, but every Toshiba player on the market is supposed to have that compatability.

Some of my clients hook their laptops DVI outputs to flat panels and hide the laptop under the table for trade shows. OR they use, pc’s to do it as well.

There are some devices out there made just for exhibition that play files to HD Displays too.

    Chris,

    You mentioned –

“Your client won’t be able to play that DVCPRO-HD file unless they have final cut pro installed.”

They would be using a PC so I’d need to output an HD file from FCP that would be compatible with QT or another media player for winXP/Vista.

    Recommendations?

    Thanks
