720p 60 footage not converting slow mo properly to 23.98
Posted by Jonathan Flookes on February 5, 2008 at 12:12 amIm capturing some footage that was shot at 60p for the slow mo effect. When I do, and I hit a timecode break or the end of the tape I find that it is being captured slow which is what I want, but i’m missing the end of the clip, like it didn’t get the whole thing.
I was trying to read though other posts to find a solution but the only thing i found was to capture more then what I want. Seeing as I have timecode breaks, I can’t do that.
Im using a Kona 3
Capture setting is Kona 3 720p 23.98 varicam
The footage was shot at 60pAny help with this would be great, ive almost got it, i want it slow, i just need the whole clip!

Then you’ll just have to do a Capture Now and set up to ignore timecode breaks.

Then capture at 60 and use the Frame Rate Converter to convert to slo mo. This is what I do.

February 5, 2008 at 1:27 amWell sadly thats what I am doing but the FRC still strips the timecode of the slow-mo clip. I know i can go back to the original if I need to, but still just a little bit of a pain, when it probably shouldn’t be.
Thanks for your help Walter, if you or anyone else can think of another way to do this with out losing TC that would be great.

February 5, 2008 at 1:59 amI ran into this and you have to capture at 60p.
You can also use Cinema Tools to conform the 60P to 23.98, or 24, 25, and 29.97 for that matter. The benefits over the frame converter tool is Cinema tools can batch, it is really fast (100 clips in less than 3min), and the clip retains its audio if you want it.
The big drawback is that the changes are made to the original clips and there is no undo. This means the clips relation to the tape is broken. I worked around this by leaving the original logged clips offline. If I need to recapture, I use the offline clips and then reconform in CT.
If you use batch conform isolate your 60P into a unique folder. The conform tool will change all QTs within a folder.

February 5, 2008 at 5:11 pmYou are going to lose the Time Code correspondence no matter what you do.
In the varispeed mode, frames are recorded out to tape at 59.94, with what can be interpreted as 29.97 code. If you do, for example, a Frame Rate Conversion down to 24P, then the code is regenerated at 23.98. If you were shooting at 60, then essentially its a 40% speed change. For all intents and purposes, the converted footage should be considered to be new original media.
Under FCP/QT, you have the option of modifying the time code to whatever value you want, for instance, to perhaps achieve the same hour number for some kind of cataloguing purpose.
But the reality is that you are generating new footage, independent of what was shot.
Simply dropping the 720P60 footage on a 23.98 timeline may result in what may APPEAR to be converted (slowed) media… but it is NOT. The player looks at the time code and determines what the clip duration is. If for example, you captured a one-minute clip at 60, then dropped it onto a 23.98 timeline, you would get a clip of one minute duration — but the media within it would play at what appears to be 40%. Some math: a one-minute 720P60 varispeed clip, converted to 23.98 should be 2 and a half minutes long. But unconverted, there will only be a one minute clip on the timeline! So you will draw the conclusion that not all the footage was captured — because the clip will play at 40% up to the end of what FCP/QT thinks is the timecode-derived duration of one minute… then stop.
What I want to know is…. why is the Panasonic Frame Rate Conversion Tool so flaky? IE. messages like “codec is not DVCProHD”, and “that clip has already been converted”, and “clip is not at 59.94″…. when they bloody well are, and haven’t been converted, because that is exactly what I am trying to do….!!!!!
Yeah, yeah, there’s all that ‘root browser’ stuff…. FIX IT!
