720p 59.94 DF
Posted by Frederic Lumiere on May 22, 2007 at 3:12 pmIf anyone would know this one, I know my friend Gary will:
Why doesn’t FC allow you to set Drop Frames on 720p 59.94?
D5 decks will allow you apparently. Right?
Thanks!

That’s been there since day one and is not addressed yet in FCP 6. Been waiting two years for this and what I was told at NAB is that it will be addressed finally in an update.

hey man, how is life? we need to catch up sometime soon.
“Why doesn’t FC allow you to set Drop Frames on 720p 59.94? D5 decks will allow you apparently. Right?”
thru trickery, yes the D5 ( and SR also) can do this.
it is my understanding that the SMPTE spec for progressive ( not PsF) in HD has always been Non-drop, apple followed it to the letter in FCP, not accounting for the fact that not one broadcaster supports the spec in that manner, as the satellites still are looking for the DF timebase for synchronisity. I have always looked at it as Apple following the letter of the spec instead of looking at what is actually being done.
It has changed in FCP6, you can now do a 59.94 DF timeline.

uh oh. gary and walter have conflicting information. let the battle of the FCP masters begin.”As I said, that’s what I was told at NAB, not saying it’s fact. We have Studio 2 here and were about to install it, but we have several projects ready to be output this week, so we’re going to hold off at the moment.
But I was told today again by someone that DF 59.94 is not in FCP 6 right now.

May 23, 2007 at 1:44 amWell thanks man. Makes sense.
In the meantime, my solution is to stripe a D5 720p 59.94 tape DF and dump the show without timecode onto it from a 720p 59.94 NDF timeline.
Now I have to deal with HD closed caption and make sure it’s 608 compliant… But that’s a whole other story.
Ahhh… can’t wait to edit in 4K 😉
