72060p conversions to 23.98p sequence with and without slomo
We’re currently cutting a broadcast show on FCP6- with an 8 core Mac w. a Kona Card- in Apple Pro RES 422 HQ.
The camera is an HDX900; most of our tapes were shot at 108024p, but some were 72060p to give us slo mo options; can we actually put these into a 23.98 timeline, and retain real time (non-slo-mo?) also when downloading from a Panasonic 1400 HD deck- Do we have to re-boot that deck each time we get to the 72060p footage- and reset to 50/60p so that it’s importing into FCP as 72060p; it seems to be doing it (even when the setting on machine is 23.98), but puts up a
E94 error message. What’s your best solution for this, please? We want the best option for downloading
in this 720P format- so that we can use footage as is, or later transfer it via Cinematools into slo-mo effects. thanks. Peter -

Is it 60p or 59.94p? Why are you going to 50/60p?

Downloading is something you do on the internet…download a song or music video. When you are dealing with decks and tapes, the term is CAPTURING. Thus the term Logging and Capturing.
I simply capture the tapes using the Kona 3-720p 59.94 DVCPro HD Easy Setup. But then you have to make the clips slow motion AFTER you capture. Using the DVCPRO HD Frame Rate Converter or Cinema Tools.

Thanks for the reply. It’s shot at Panasonic’s 72060p. In the 1400 deck- the only output identified is
50/60 (output) there is no 59.97 out of the deck.Peter

Thanks for that…yes that makes sense. But I’m just wondering if there’s any options- should you not want Slo-mo, after the fact. That is some way to put the 72060p material into the 23.98 timeline, cleanly.

Peter, where are you located?
The Panasonic deck can handle 59.94 or 60p, and even 50p. It depends on how you shot it. You have to set the deck for the format.

Ok thanks. Located in Vancouver BC. I hadn’t seen the 59.94 as an option; we just set general 50/60 output- then deck auto recognized 72060p; I guess my main concern, is do we have the option to put a piece of video shot at 72060p into a 23.98 timeline- but, running at regular speed. Or will it create a stutter or sped-up effect? Running through cinema tools, of course creates a perfect slo-mo effect.
But what if we decide not to use the slo-mo and we want to use the 72060p shot at normal speed?Thanks again.

If you drop the 59.94 clip into a 23.98 timeline, it should play back at normal speed fine. I do this all the time.
Or you can use the Frame Rate Converter and check the option REMOVE PULLDOWN.
