did you guys remembered to boot your macs in 64bit kernel?

I must say I was very optimistic about FCPX but when I tried it I was totally disappointed,
just like many of you… but after reading that Apple FAQ and testing it bit more and thinking
about our workflow I must say I am optimistic again. Btw. switching my kernel and extensions
to 64bit gave me much better performance with HD footage.

My biggest concerns was XML but we hear its coming soon so we will just need to wait,
Resolve 8 isn’t even out yet so… One other concern was tape workflow but with BM MEdia Express
    that problem is solved easily…

We are actually planing to put one server in our deck room and use it for ingesting and archiving
and distribute media over network. By our calculation we wont even need to copy
our media to workstations but will be able to keep it there.

We will need different workflow but it was about time for some change, and it is a change in right
direction, but it will take some time to adjust. All in all after spending some time with FCPX
I can say I am really starting to like it, but I wont be replacing my old FCP7 just yet…

Best regards and sorry for my bad English…

What do you mean 64 bit boot ?

In your activity monitor , Motion and FCPX arent 64 bit already ?

go into About this Mac-More info-Software and look at 64-bit Kernel and Extensions:

if its NO, then you need to make it boot into 64bit mode.

after that FCPX works much better…

I tried shot detection from and exported file and it was 95 percent there.

Not ideal, but it’s a workaround.

HUH? On an Intel Mac (some exclusions) even if it is set to 32 bit any 64 bit app WILL RUN 64 bit. The only advantage with setting the boot to 64 bit is if you have over something like 96gig RAM.
Snow Leopard will normally boot 32 bit for the drivers but is actually running 64 bit.
Windows, on the otherhand has a 3 gig limit in 32bit. Intel mac running SL is NOT Windows.
Google it if you don’t believe me.

I canot give you proof but while I was working on 32bit kernel with 1080p h264 files FCPX was “laggy”,
now on 64bit kernel it feels much snappier, skimming is much faster more responsive…

well maybe something else was going on but it wasn’t background processing and
my files are not transcoded now…

compered to before now I can edit h264 same as prores…

btw. more I learn more I am starting to really like new FCPX 🙂
    hope they add XML soon
