640×480 vs 720×480 complication
I am preparing to edit old SD DV Mini tape previously captured. I was under the impression the footage was all 720×480 as seen in FCP7 board (in pic below) however when loading the clips into CatDv I discovered some were digitalized as 640×480 4:3, and others at 720×480 3:2. Can this be corrected by converting to pro-res or am I doomed to re-digitizing?

Overwhelming majority is 640×480. Eventually I will be editing this old footage with new HD video with it.

Well these are great questions that I don’t have answers for yet. The material is a documentary filmed over 7 years on a topic that is now timely. There is 500 hours of digitized (4:3) SD that I thought was digitized as 3:2. I do have access to the tapes, although they are aging. We hope to enter film festivals so we are looking to get the best quality. I welcome any suggestions! Thank you kindly for your time and advice!

Well, for the best quality, you will want to recapture all that SD footage through a hardware converter, Either a Terranex or AJA Capture hardware…upconverting that footage to HD Pillarbox. And then manually resize the last 25%. So what I suggest is cutting with the source footage as temp, and then when you go to online, recapture only what’s used in the cut via that upconverting method.

I have been reading about the Terranex. I currently have a Sony DSR-11 deck and work on a Mac with CatDV and Premier. Adding the Terranex to this system will work or will I need a different deck and additional hardware/software? What happens if the tapes are too old to get capture and I have to use the current digitized material?

Then you’ll have to use software means. Adobe After Effects is great at this. the only issue, and its a biggie, is that the rendered file has ZERO links to the original. All metadata is lost…reel number, time code, and time of day tagging, everything. So an EDL of the final online won’t reflect the source of the upconverted files at all. So your EDL production or footage tracking will have to be done with the offline locked cut.
PLUS…this is LOT of manual work on a clip by clip bases. You can media manage the footage used in the cut, and get it with handles. But then all the work in AE will be manual…and then the resulting uprezed clips will need to be manually over-cut into the final timeline, eyematching.
That DSR-11 doesn’t have good outputs for connecting to a terranex or AJA….composite video only. DV is at least a 1:1 lossless transfer. You’d have to rent a deck with Component outs or SDI outs, and deck control.

Wow! Im taking a deep breath….I just spoke with B&H. They said the Sony DSR 11 has composite that can hook up to Teranex. I understand that composite does not have the quality of component but they said the Teranex would compensate. They don’t even sell component decks anymore. What do You think? I would like to recapture most important footage immediately

I really don’t see how the Terranex can add in information lost when you send out composite. Sorry, they are blowing wind out their ass, in order to sell you the Terranex.
See if you can rent a deck. And as I said, I wouldn’t capture it all NOW…that takes up a LOT of space. Edit, and then MEDIA MANAGE your project and recapture only the DV footage you use. Well, there’s a lot more involved than that…that’s just the basic idea. You’ll have to duplicate the sequence, strip out all the non-DV footage, then media manage that as MAKE OFFLINE, and choose an HD format to recapture, then recapture that…then add that new footage back to the sequence. A lot involved. Trust me, I do this for a living. Onlining archival docs is a bit of my specialty.

Now this is a stretch but I have a old media 100 system that used pipeline to the deck and had a converter so that provided component output. Can that be rigged to work? Sorry to be, well stupid but I have been out of video world for a long time! I am thinking that the cost of a component deck rental is going to add up quick.
