640×480 clip into 720×480 sequence problem
Posted by Peterson on November 28, 2006 at 7:58 pmIssue: when placed into a 720X480 NTSC DV 3:2 sequence, the 640×480 clip, which looks fine (and whole) in the viewer, loses large chunks of the right side of the frame when placed in canvas. It is gone, not off frame ready to be repositioned, but disappeared.
What am I missing here? How do I avoid the auto-crop that takes place?thanks ahead of time!
best,peter

November 28, 2006 at 8:42 pmFCP is idiotic with this sort of stuff. It’s actually scaling up your video so that the 640 width fills the 720 space, instead of changing the distort attribute in the motion tab. FCP should consider the vertical attribute to be the key factor since fields are the most important thing to match up. Stretching fields just creates mush.
So go into the motion tab and make sure scale is 100%. Adjust the distort attribute to fill the width.

Thanks for your reply & time. However, that doesn’t do it because I did try all of that before bugging the forum: once cut into the 720X480 sequence, the right frame info is gone, gone. Resetting the scale to 100% down from 112 or so it defaults to and resetting the distortion to 0 does make the pic appear ‘normal’ again. But like I said, without the right 10% or so of the frame. I noticed this immediately because i had created a lot of graphics with tight margins left/right (tilts on magazine covers, for instance) and now they dont work / are chopped off. mystery mine –
thanks

November 28, 2006 at 9:28 pmmystery still – I even tried rotating clip 180, then again 90 degrees while in viewer before cutting into canvas to see where the cut would be, you know to sort of trick it… always the same/right side of frame when viewed normally (i.e. not whatever became the right side once rotated). So somehow this side is being flagged for cropping.
Running recently installed 5.1.2 on a dual 2ghz G5/ OSX 10.4.8 ( although I never tried this before so who knows if that makes any difference) -

November 28, 2006 at 9:45 pmNo alpha channel in your 640 footage? thinking maybe a stray alpha channel that ends up cutting it?

November 12, 2008 at 2:15 amHow did you solve this??? I am having the SAME ISSUE! I copied a quicktime from a DVD using Cinematize into my FCP project and it plays fine in the Viewer but the minute I drag it into the time-line or on the canvas the right hand side of the frame is cropped off!
What did you finally do?
