I have been using Vegas 9 Pro 32 bit as a demo for about 3 weeks now and like it. I am due to get my registered copy from Sony today. I want to go with the 64 bit version since I have Windows 7 64 bit on a Quad core PC. I was just wondering if there are advantages with the 64 bit version of Vegas since probably not all plugins will work with 64 bit. Thanks Ron

    Hi!

I’m new here but I might aswell answer that. My experience is that the x64 version is slightly faster at rendering and other tasks. How much faster? depends alot on what you do and your system in other terms like memory, hardrive etc. I primarily run the x64 version and I think it runs fantastically good. No matter the rendering speed you are getting access to your computers RAM if you have more than 3gb of ram which is another benefit of course.

You are right, there are few plugins yet that is available to the x64 version but they are slowly appearing. Also I don’t know about you, but I rarely need any extra plugins so I’ve found the x64 version the best.

Thanks for the quick response Kristan. I think that I will also go with the 64 bit version. It is just a matter of time that most applications will be compatible and there are not many that I use either.

Migration of plugins to 64bit will probably be slow. Everything has been historically so far since 64bit is yet to become mainstream. Even now when 64bit gets common on computers with high memory 32bit applications is still the most common and few bothers about the difference.

Still if you don’t really need any of the 32bit plugins 64bit is probably the way to go. You could have the 32bit installed at the same time and load the same projects in that version if you like. But if you open projects with 32bit effects in the 64bit version These will of course not be available anymore.

I do most most of my work in the 64-bit version due to the better Dynamic Ram access and faster rendering. I have numerous 32 bit video and audio plugins that won’t show up in Vegas 9 64-bit. If I need to use these I can open the project up in the 32-bit version and apply them as neccessary.

Sometimes I have finished the project in the 32-bit version but have often rendered out the segments I need from the 32-bit with the plugins I want applied then brought those clips back into the 64-bit to finish the program. If I know I will need a bunch of 32-bit plugs then I just do the whole job in v9 32. So what if it takes a bit longer to render, it’s not a big deal breaker here. Install both versions, won’t cost you any more.

Ah good, some confirmation that the 2 versions can be installed at once, I haven’t yet confirmed this myself just heard it is possible. There’s been no need here as I haevn’t felt that I need any of those extra effects as of yet. Vegas is a very complete program. I’m new to video editing too so that may be a reason but I don’t know, I just don’t feel the more exotic transitions etc has much of a place in my videos. It feels more like something present in a show like Americas Funniest Homevideos or something 😉

Oh yes, no problem. I also have v8.0c on board as it is still one of the most stable Vegas versions to date. It is mainly some of the NewBlue and Pixelan organic type plugins that are sometimes suitable but not available in 64-bit.

I know all the NewBlue plugins work in 64-bit. I’m pretty sure the Pixelan ones do as well. You may just need to download the most current versions.

It is great to hear that Chris. I did not know if the two versions would work independently if installed on the same machine. The best of both worlds. Thank you for your input on this.

    Ed ~

Yes you are 100% correct. I should download the latest versions I guess. Doing mainly TV stuff so it’s the good old cut and some dissolves that we use most. In fact I can’t remember the last time I used Pixelan wipes. Vegas has most things I ever need.
