    60p versus 24pn

    I am doing a project with my hvx200 that will have a lot of opportunity for aerials. We will be flying every day for two weeks in helicopters and airplanes over some beautiful scenery. We will be documenting a group of pilots and scientists flying the Lewis and Clark trail. Needless to say, we will be shooting A LOT. We have two 8GB cards, one 4GB card and a P2 store. In addition we are bringing three 640 GB external drives and a brand new screaming Macbook Pro. I am not worried about filling up the external hard drives, but I am worried that we don’t have enough P2 cards for the workflow. Shooting in 24pn will save alot of space, and I like the look. Will we be compromising quality in the aerial part of the project by shooting 24pn versus shooting 720/60 or even 1080i? The aerials will probably be about 60% of the project. We are renting a handheld gyrostabilizer to help with the vibrations, but I am still worried that the 24pn will make the video a little too stuttery. On a seperate yet related question, if we shoot 720/60 for the aerials would it cut well in FCP with the 24pn stuff?

    If your project is 24p then you are better off shooting 24pN. You could try shooting at 36,48 and 60fps. If you shoot 60p you would have to re-conform that footage to 24p anyway.
    While we are on the topic….
    If you have the ability to shoot 24pN at 60fps with the HVX why??? would you ever want or need to shoot 720 60p???
    I understand with the VariCam you have to shoot 60p to achieve better slo-mo but shooting on P2 why would you want to shoot 720 60p??

    Might want to watch out about helicopter vibrations while transfering p2 footage to the p2 store. I would do a test on this.
    A sensor will stop the hard drive from accepting material from the p2 card. I have a feeling that you will be shooting in slow motion to reduce vibrations and this will further reduce your record times on the p2 card. Seems to me like you need more cards.
