I usually shoot 720 at 30p on my panasonic HVX200. I shot this weekend at 1080i 60i. When I drop the clips into new project the project/timeline is registering as 29.97i. Any idea why it’s doing this?

Did you put in a 720p30 clip first?

    All the best,

nope, and just to be sure that I didn’t, I created a test project and jumped the 60i clip in and sure enough it made it 30i again.

What do you want it to be 29.97i or 29.97p?

    All the best,

It’s merely a nomenclature thing. 29.97i (30i) and 59.94i (60i) are the same. One is defining frames and one fields. Manufacturers simply aren’t consistent.

so you are saying 30i and 60i are the same thing? I’ve never even heard of 30i until now. So it’s 60 interlaced fields? and 30 interlaces frames? Not sure I’m totally embracing the concept.

Ultimately I’m just trying to maintain the best HD quality.

phew, as an industry professional I have to admit that interlaced and progressive STILL confuse me. To be honest. I don’t know what I want. I thought I wanted 1080 60i to give me the best HD quality. So I assumed I would export an mp4 (h264) 1920×1080 at 59.94.

I didn’t even know 30i was a “thing” until I noticed it in FCPX. Can I not export a final master at 59.94? Maybe you can clarify the difference between 30i and 30p??

Yes 29.97i (30i) and 59.94i (60i) are the same. They both describe 30fps interlaced video. 29.97i usually describes the frame rate, particularly when it comes to timecode. 59.94i normally is used to describe the system setting, as in frequency. So, for example, Sony HDCAM interlaced is 1080i/59.94 (the system) and uses 29.97 timecode. 1080i and 1080PsF are also the same.

Now to make your head spin 😉 There technically is no such format at 720p/30 😉 The only actual broadcast format is 720p/50 or 720p/59.94. In that case you have 60 (or 50) unique, whole frames. 720pn/30 came about as a way to conserve media on a P2 card (I think JVC also used it on the HDV1 format) and FCP was able to deal with it natively in sequences. However, if you actually send it out through a capture card, it doesn’t exist. In the case of Kona, FCP7 duplicates every frame, on-the-fly, in real-time and presents the cards with a 60-frame video stream.
