Shot a music video at 60fps. I will then conform the speed to 30fps for slow motion.
Running into major performance issues with FCPx now that I’m about 75% done with editing.

I created about 11 different compound clips with all of the different takes. Those are still at 60fps

Then I created 4 new compound clips from the 11. These 4 are now at the 30fps.
My system is now at a crawl. I turned off BG rendering to help.

I noticed that I have to render inside these compound clips for the speed conform. That is okay, but anytime I do any cut, I have to re-render the clip. Just a simple blade cut, and I have to render again.

Anyone have any suggestions on what I should have done for a faster workflow?

Are you using the Conform Speed command in the Retime menu?

Also the motive of your workflow in unclear. Why are you creating these Compound Clips?

Perhaps you might have run all the clips through compressor to retune them (optical flow is built in to compressor) and the just used the new media in your edit.

FCP would then have no processing to do while editing.

    David.

But David, why processing at all if the video is 60fps and the project is 30fps and he would like to have them run slow motion. That would just be reflagging and involve creating no new frames (that optical flow does) and the risks of distortion.

In FCP Legacy one might reflag in Cinema Tools. In FCPX Conform should reflag the clip. That he’s getting rendering implies something else, some other setting, is going on. I suspect the issue might be around the Compound clips but can’t be sure without more workflow details.

Apple is again mixing up people with the terminology.
Conforming should results in playing a file with a different time-base.
It should never be any kind of rendering going on.
If we go to any kind of interpolation (nearest, blending, optical flow), or frame dropping, that’s not a Conforming, but a plain re-timing.

Conforming so far has been a “destructive’ process because affects to the original clip.
FCPX (so powerful on metadata) should have a kind “non-destructive’ conforming, otherwise is not adding nothing new to FCP on this matter.

I’m creating the compound clips just to narrow down the footage until I get to my final edit.
So, I’ve taken about 65 clips and created 11 different compound clips. Each compound clip contains 6 connected clips and my settings for these compound clips are 1280×720, 59.94fps.

Then I rough cut those 11 compound clips and created 4 new compound clips with the setting of 1280×720 @ 30fps.

From there, I did the conform speed to give me my slow motion effect. When I do that, I get the orange bar at the top of my timeline.
I will render, but if I drag an in or out point, It wants me to re-render again.

Right now, if i move any clips around or do any kind of edits, i’m waiting for about 16 seconds while the rainbow wheel spins.

Am I just pushing the software too much? This doesn’t seem like it is anything outrageous, but something isn’t right.

    Thanks guys.

Well, I’ve exported my Conformed compound clips and created a new Event and also a new Project.

This has DRAMATICALLY improved the performance issues. I no longer am waiting 16-20 seconds between edits.

I really didn’t want to export the compound clips, because i wanted to be able to dive back in if something needed tweaking, but there was no other options at this point.

It seems that even Conform causes a render.
