    Hi All,

    Not sure where to post this. Hoping somebody here can point me in the right direction.

    I have a client that wants to display media on a 6 panel video wall. More specifically, 6 42″ plasmas lined up horizontally. (essentially a 20′ wide video banner) I would have to edit and combine pre-existing media to run on a 2-3 minute loop. Does anyone know the best way to approach this, and what software (ideally Mac based) I should use to compile and display this kind of project. Also, can I use FCP/AE in the workflow?

    Any info would be greatly appreciated…

    Thanks
    Mike Russell

    I’m not sure about your exact situation, but back in the day we used to use some piece of hardware to make video walls. It took a regular signal and enlarged it, sending a quadrant out to 9 different televisions. Think of the U2 Zoo tour.

    I’d have to think there are devices today that do the same thing for HD rez, etc. In fact, I went to a conference here in Atlanta for MCA-I a year ago, and it was in conjunction with InfoComm. The main InfoComm deal seemed to be video walls, presentation stuff, etc. Lots of video wall stuff. Big plasmas, 3D video walls, etc.

    But that’s all I’ve got for ya.

    you could do this 2 ways.

    Use a ‘spider’ (or spyder?) which is a device which will split an HD, SD or computer signal into 6 SD outputs.

    This will let you ‘map’ different parts of the image to different screens. Not cheap though, especially for 6 outs.

    Or you could burn 6 dvd’s and play them using a synchroniser. These are available from a guy in the states. Can’t remember where though. Much cheaper than first option.

    I’d do an initial edit for timings in FCP, then export using auto duck and do all the graphics work in AE.

    Make a 4320 x 480 size comp (6 x NTSC frames) and do all your graphics work in this. You’ll be able to see how your existing media stands up in this format.

    Then render 6 movies out from this master comp, one for each screen.

    Then burn to separate dvds.

    AE is the way to go because the frame size can be anything you like. Also you can render out quarter size previews to save time. AE eats this sort of thing up. From experience, much better than flame, etc for this sort of thing.

    You can also do it all the same way iin FCP. But I’d go the AE way too.

    This may be a solution using sync-ed DVD players;
