    I am working on a 2.66, 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3 laptop.
    I have final cut 6.0.6
    I have used MPEG streamclip to transfer footage to Apple Pro Res shot at 1080p on the 5D

    I have 5 video tracks that I have mutliclip together. Playback was very bad so i tried reducing the number of tracks but playback is still bad. My timeline is set to low quality playbacl and unlimited RT.

    I then decided to stack them all on the timeline, 5 video tracks, and edit from there. It plays a little better but then stutters and stops.

    Is my machine not fast enough to handle this workflow? Is there a way to create an offline and then an online with 5D footage?

    I have cut with prores before. Not sure what the difference is. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

    Playing back multiple layers, or “streams”, requires a fast RAID array of drives. You need a drive that spins fast so that it can play back those multiple streams. FW800 won’t cut it. That does two streams max. You need an eSATA two drive setup AT LEAST. Caldigit VR, GRAID 3. And an eSATA card.

    If you are on FCP 7, you might want to try recompressing to ProRes Proxy for editing, then reconnecting to the ProRes 422 files when you are finished.

    Excellent! Thanks for the advice. I’ll look into getting the eSATA card.

    A small observation. On the timeline with the 5 video tracks: Only one track does not like playing over the others.

    3 3
    4 4
    5 5

    tracks 2-5 have no problem playing back with each other all stretched out (C). however there is one file that stops play back and needs to be alone on the timeline (B).

    Any idea why this is? Does it have to do with that specific file? This is completely workable, just kinda thirsty to understand why it is happening hahaha. Hope my diagram helps understand what i’m talking about.
