5D markIII best portrait lens
We will be getting a 3 lens kit

to shoot video.We also use our 5D markIII for stills – portraits, head shots and stage performances. We’ve been using Canon 24-105mm f/4L IS USM AF Lens which came with the camera. It does a good job but is not long enough for stage performances and I’ve read you can get higher quality for portrait head shots. Primes with lower F-stops. (85 or 135?)
I love the auto focus control on the 5D which of course you loose with the cinema lenses.
We will have a focus control as part of the video kit we are assembling.
What I’m looking for is the best quality for portrait/head shots and stage performances.
For stage I want a long fast lens. For portrait/headshots the best possible quality.What lenses would you recommend?

How far are you away from the stage? 135mm and 85mm even 100mm are all good portrait lenses. Even a 70-200 IS 2.8L will work.

Well at 105mm our lens was not fast enough or long enough to cover the stage acts. 200 should be fine.
What lens series do you recommend for the 135mm and 85mm even 100mm for the head shots? Do you agree that the cinema lenses are not really the best choice for stills?

As I haven’t used the cinema series, I can’t comment on them. I know for stills, auto focus comes in handy but I always manually tweak to make sure the eyes are in focus.
As for the 135mm, 100mm and 85mm, mine are all Canon ƒ2 lenses. I didn’t spring for the L series except for the zooms I own. All my primes are ƒ1.4 or 2.0. All the zooms are L series ƒ2.8.

Do you find that the primes are better for head shots and portraits? No big advantage for the L series primes?

The L series glass is better glass. Do you need it? Rent two lenses: an L series and the non L in the same focal length and do a side by side test. I’m pretty happy with the primes I have that are not L series.
I find primes are sharper than zoom but YMMV.
