    New to 5D

I can bring up the points in the view finder. I can bring them up on the lcd screen by pressing INFO a few times and then the points button; but when I do this, i only see the settings not the image i want to shoot. If I bring up the image first and press info a few times the other settings appear over the image, but pressing the points button does nothing. So how can i use AF points while viewing the lcd screen? Also if I get a mini hdmi to HDMI cable will the points show up on an external monitor? We will using the 5D for both stills and video so same questions apply for video.
