5D – How to record audio/FCP workflow
Hi, I have a shoot coming up with my 5D and I was wondering what the best workflow might be for audio. I have hired an audio guy who will be recording to a hard drive. I also have a Juiced Link XLR box and Magic Lantern. I have this setup before, but have had mixed results with levels (no way to monitor the camera as it records)
So the question is do I have the sound guy record at 30fps or 29.97fps. And do I edit at 30fps or during my conform to ProRes do I change the frame rate to 29.97. What seems to be working for you guys?

It’s simple.
The canon shoots 30 FPS.
For normal video work, you need 29.97
So you will end up slowing down your video to that. (Unnoticeable to the eye, but your sound gets out of sync as it runs too fast.You cannot record sound at 30 or 29.97 fps, as sound works in samples per second, not in frames per second. But you can use that to create another playback speed than recording speed.
with a bit of math:
48000 / 29.97 * 30 = 48048
So ask your soundguy to set his recorder to a sample rate of 48048, or change the stamp yourself later on. (it’s a fast, harmless procedure).Bouke
